Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Harika is a purebred Kangal Dog, just 14 months old. She is not yet full grown. She is a lovely, happy girl who adores people and children. Harika means "beautiful" in Turkish. She is 2nd generation out of purebred imports from Turkey. She is highly relational and wants to be talked to and touched. She loves head rubs and belly rubs. She looks right into your eyes and sees your soul, and loves you.
She also loves to play with other dogs. But she is a big girl from working Livestock Guardian Dog lines, and her wrestling is energetic. She is not aggressive, but will have a strong sense of property ownership and protection. She is not food aggressive nor strongly resource protective. She is offered for pet adoption because she plays with her sheep and goats rather than lie submissively and watch them. Very likely Harika will mature into a lovely, mellow Livestock Guardian, but probably not until she is about 3 years old. Until then, she will make a happy, affectionate pet.
Harika was the first of her litter to walk, the first to open her eyes, the first to run, the first to make eye contact and engage with people -- she is very intelligent. She is confident but willing to be submissive. The ideal situation would be if there were already an older male dog. Harika will not be placed in a home with another female dog.
Harika sits and lies down on command, walks on a leash, and comes when she wants to. Please read several breed descriptions about Kangal Dogs and/or Anatolian Shepherds (many do not distinguish between the breeds).
Kangal Dogs should NOT be taken on walks or to dog parks. Harika will need a secure fence, at least 4-ft tall. She does not dig under nor jump over fences. But she will need some companionship (= some other animal) all the time to be content to stay within her property fence.
Harika will be a joyful family companion with strong protective instincts. She will bark at perceived threats, especially at night, but will never bark at "nothing". Most of the time she is silent and observant.
