This handsome 3 year old German Shepherd is SPORT! Sport belonged to an Amish gentleman as a “shop” dog however he retired and sold the shop. He spent most of his life in a 10x10 kennel, overstimulated, stressed and frustrated that he couldn’t interact with things on the other side of the fence. He remains friendly with most people that he meets out and about however he has been protective and given warning bites when he feels he needs to protect his family inside his home/yard. All of these bites have occurred during our initial two week shelter shut down and, to Sport's benefit, the shut down was not carried out properly in any of the circumstances. However we now know this is a problem and need his new family to be completely serious with following our instructions on how to best integrate Sport. He is currently in a foster home and doing well. Sport is extremely reactive to other dogs during his walks on leash. He needs to work on de-escalating and we recommend working with a trainer. We do require that his new home have a fenced yard and preferably a privacy fence and not in a development setting. His ideal home would be in a country setting without a lot of visitors and a family that can work on the bad habits that he picked up while guarding the shop. His new family must have similar dog experience. Not just “I grew up with German Shepherds” but actual experience in dealing with a reactive dog. A fenced yard is a must but we do want him to have exercise outside of a fenced yard - hikes in a park, obedience class, anything to exercise his brain as German shepherds need a job to make them feel fulfilled. The old adage “a tired puppy is a good puppy" definitely applies to Sport! He does ride well in a car! Sport does need an adult only home with no other pets at this time. Sport has been neutered, vaccinated, tested negative for heartworms and microchipped. Adoption $250. Please fill out an application at www.companimals.org and tell us what you can offer Sport!
