UPDATED BIO 01/24/2010: Sandee is a beautiful 5.4 lb 10 month old baby girl. She is recovering from a case of Demodectic Mange (read below to see more about this non-contagious skin condition). She was rescued from a high-kill shelter 6 short weeks ago.

Sandee is doing very well. She snores a bit, and the Dogtor will be evaluating her to make sure she's OK, but her mange is clearing up very quickly. She is a happy, affectionate, playful little puppy. Sandee loves when FM holds her on her shoulder like a little baby. She snuggles her head in FM's neck and falls asleep...... and snores and snores. Her weight has finally stabilized, and she's learned to play with her Foster Fur-brother. They really enjoy their time together. When you see Sandee's transformation (see her video/slide show), it's apparent that this little girl has recovered quickly, and will continue to improve by leaps and bounds!

Sandee will be ready for adoption once she has successfully completed her mange treatment which will hopefully be by late February.


UPDATED BIO 1/13/2009: Sandee is a sweet 10 month old 5.2 lb little girl. Only a few short weeks ago, Sandee came into our group as a little girl covered in what felt like gravel, her skin weeping and oozing from her Demodectic Mange that was never treated. It is easy to see after her remarkable improvement that Sandee just needed a little TLC. She should never have had to suffer like she did.

Sandee has come a long way with her mange treatments. She just keeps getting better and better. You can see that her hair is growing in on her face. She is so playful, and she loves everypuppy she meets. She plays with her foster brother when she feels well. They wrestle and tug toys together. When she goes on walks, she runs up to other dogs and just wants to play. She gets on her back and shows how submissive she is.

Yesterday Sandee had her dental cleaning under anesthesia and had to have 16 teeth removed. These were all retained baby teeth that never fell out. One canine was so high in her upper jaw that it was right by her nasal passage. We are hoping that her little jaw will straighten out with time now that these she's got more room inside her mouth. She has no front upper teeth, and the vet says those permanent teeth are high up in her gums and may never come down. This poor little puppy is a prime example of the neglect that some backyard breeders show their dogs. Demodex is passed on genetically, and while it can be treated, it shouldn't exist in the first place. These breeders just keep breeding dogs with Demodex.

Sandee is a sweel little girl and deserves a wonderful and loving forever home. She has 32 more days of treatment for her mange and should be ready for adoption mid-March. She is wee wee pad trained, and pee pees on the paper, but she prefers to go into the bathroom when FM is not looking to poo. See how smart she is! At least she has the room right!

UPDATED BIO 12/12/2009: Hi, my name is Sandee and I just got to my foster home a few days ago. I am 9 months old and weigh 5.6 lbs. I am very sick with Demodectic mange. (You can read more about that below). Foster mommy is working on a slideshow of ALL the recent doggies in UYR who have all had such wonderful recoveries. She says it's important for other people to see that someday my outsides will match my beautiful insides. :)

Foster Mom says right now I feel like I am covered in gravel. My skin is so broken down and covered in scabs. Even with all my problems, she says I am such a happy perky pup that she is so glad I was saved. My jaw is a little crooked and some teeth seem to be missing (maybe I was left in a cage and chewed it a lot, trying to get out?), but I eat well when she puts water in my food to soften it. I have no eyebrows or eyelashes right now and some more of my hair will fall out when I start my treatments next week. (It will grow back, though! I promise!) The dips are toxic, but I need them; so pray for me to tolerate them and get better.

I love to play high five with FM and bite her fingers. She doesn't want me to do that so now I have some great chew sticks to chew on. Just think, if FM didn't take me I may have been put to sleep because of my condition. Nobody wanted me but her. Thank you FM and to all the wonderful people out there who are thinking of me and helping me by sending some money to UYR for my medicine!!! It means THE WORLD to me!!!!

ORIGINAL BIO 12/9/2009: Every once in a while (more and more often these days) an extremely sad case comes through UYR's doors. Today, this sad case was named Sandee. This sweet little girl is estimated at only 9 months. She weighs a mere 5.6 lbs. Sandee, as you can see, has a SEVERE case of Demodectic Mange, a type of non-contagious mange that is fully treatable. How her owners allowed her to progress to this stage is shocking and infuriating to those of us who truly care about these helpless creatures.

Sandee was found as a stray, likely abandoned by her owners, and waited for 5 days for her owners to find her and reclaim her. Today, on her final day, United Yorkie Rescue decided to be this little girl's best chance at a happy and healthy life. We have had many successes in treating mange, and we are expecting no less in this case. Sandee was spayed at the shelter today, which will actually help to cut down on her circulating hormones and will likely improve the mange. In two weeks, she will start mange treatment which will last 6 weeks. Sandee is receiving antibiotics and pain medication, but she is not out of the woods yet. Her skin breakdown is so severe that she has a deep skin infection called pyoderma. She also has an eye infection and will need to be carefully monitored and treated until she is well.

Please consider making a donation to help this little girl get well as soon as possible. Her bills are likely to total over $800 by the time she is finished with her treatment. She's very tired today, and is enjoying her comfortable bed and good food, but she still has the energy to wag her little tail. She saw herself in the mirror and got excited, like she wanted to play. We are keeping her quiet and comfortable, but we do believe that soon she will be playing with her furbrothers and fursisters.
