Ranger (and his friend Kane - you'll see a lot of similarities in their listings) arrived knowing very little about how to be a dog and a family member. Ranger, who currently weighs 86 pounds, was born in June 2019 and spent his first two years living outside and left pretty much to his own devices. This, of course, led to boredom, which led to Ranger seeking to find his own source of fun and stimulation, which involved digging and running and chasing cars, which ended up with CAR -1 RANGER LEG - 0 - so Ranger is now a tripod dog. He gets around just great, though, and has a happy disposition and a sunny outlook on life.
Ranger has not yet learned about toys, and we are sure he is going to love a good game of tug or kill-the-squeaker just as soon as he figures it out. When he arrived, he was "blowing coat" (that fun game every summer where a shepherd's undercoat starts hurling itself to the wind, singing "Born Free" and providing soft bedding for birdsnests everywhere). It seemed like he had never been brushed, and it turns out he LOVES being brushed!
He is a super smart boy who is very treat motivated, so should be a fun dog to train. In spite of his outdoor existence, he has not once soiled his kennel at the shelter, so appears to be potty trained. After those couple of years as an outside dog, we have found that Ranger desires nothing more than to be inside with people.
His challenges include digging holes or climbing over the fence when left outside alone; a crazy-high prey drive toward cats and chickens; and some resource guarding around other dogs. He is also selective about his dog friends, and plays pretty roughly. His ideal home would be as an only pet, or if you have another large adult dog, they should meet at the shelter in Republic first to see if they like each other, and then should be fed separately to avoid resource guarding issues. (It is possible to train a dog to not resource guard, but it takes a lot of time and patience - what a great feeling when they get there, though).
The volunteers say Ranger is super handsome (now that his coat is being brushed regularly), sits nicely for treats and petting, and is smart enough to be trained to do almost anything. We feel that Ranger and Kane should go to separate homes to give each the opportunity to blossom.

All pets arrive spayed/neutered, dewormed, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption fee is a suggested minimum of $95 (more gratefully accepted). All pets are placed with a 30-day money-back trial period, to give pet and family enough time to discover any unknown allergies or other conflicts.
