My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sparky is a magnificent 10-1/2 year old male American Bulldog who was surrendered by his family on June 15, 2021 along with his best friend Sanchez (a small Chihuahua/Dachshund mix) who had shared his home.

Sparky has a white short smooth coat with several patches of dark brown/brindle on his sides/back and at the base of his long tail. Sparky has an adorable face with a large brindle patch on the left side of his face, soulful brown eyes, and short floppy ears.

This big guy has a very sweet, docile disposition and a gentle easygoing personality. Sparky epitomizes the oft-used phrase "gentle giant".

Sparky had been surrendered by his original owner in mid-October 2018. His behavior profile at that time indicated that ..

"Sparky is good with all ages of children as well as other dogs. He did not share his home with cats, so we don't know how he feels about feline friends. Sparky has no known behavioral issues. He is afraid of loud noises such as thunderstorms and shows his fear by trembling."

We noted at that time that Sparky's favorite activity was sleeping (a man after our own heart), so we doubt that this has changed since he is now a few years older.

Sparky had been listed as a 'Special Needs Dog' because he had food allergies and required a special diet. Back in October 2018 he was being fed 4-Health White Fish & Potatoes and did well on that particular brand/variety.

These updated photos of Sparky were taken on June 15, 2021. He currently weighs 100.3 lbs and appears to be having some skin/allergy and joint issues. Sparky walks slowly on a leash these days.

There's something about an older dog that tugs at your heartstrings, and Sparky definitely melted many hearts during his photo session. He was a real gentlemen when HSOV kennel tech Tess Grogg and HSOV assistant manager Rachal Merrow accompanied him outdoors .. And when Sparky was having trouble walking back to the shelter, those compassionate young ladies joined forces to provide carry-in service for Sparky.

Sparky has been kept indoors.

We hope that an individual or family will consider giving Sparky a dream home where he can spend his golden years in comfort and will be given the love and care he truly deserves.
