My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Blu
Nickname: Blucifer, Blufus, Boof, Bluto
Breed: Land Hippo / Rhino / Gargoyle Cross aka Pittie Mix
Age: 5.5 Years
Weight: 75 lbs.
Before OMD: We were at the shelter picking up another dog. We saw Blu's owner, in tears, surrendering him. Timing/situation alone meant he was supposed to join the OMD Rescue crew. The giant head, meaty paws, and leg warmers sealed the deal.
Medical stuff: Thanks to a lot of TLC, many vet appointments, and some trial and error, we are proud to say our rhino is now in tip top shape! Blu will always need a higher quality diet (allergies) and daily eye drops (hot mess express in multiple ways), which will need to be filled via a compounding online pharmacy.
Energy level: Think walrus sunning himself on a beach. Minimal movement; maximum sunbathing. Hard pass on walks longer than a 1/2 mile.
What makes us laugh: When he sings the song of his people - think Wookie meets whale. It’s infrequent and mostly just when he needs to *gently* remind you that he wants out of his crate if you aren't moving quickly enough.
Our favorite things: His greeting routines. Welcome home = slo-mo zoomies, head nudges, and his big ol’ smile. Nice to meet you = drop to his back, lay on your feet (so you can’t leave), and offer you his belly for all the rubs.
His favorite things: Any and all toys (with the intention of fully destroying each and every one), treats, belly rubs, car rides, seeking out and enjoying the best sun spots.
Past Employment: Office Co-worker. Accompanied foster mom to work and happily said hello to everyone while simultaneously soliciting belly rubs.
Current Job: Office Greeter/Morale Booster. Promoted when his demands for pets, welcomed distractions, and hilarious antics while carrying the bigger-than-he-is empty water jugs made everyone happier/more productive. Moving on up!
Dream job: Toss up. Quality control/tester at Bark Box and professional napper.
Naughtiest thing he’s ever done: *Allegedly* destuffed an entire dog bed. Just once and he was not caught in the act. He’s
pleading insufficient evidence.
Preferred mode of transportation: Motorcycle sidecar. You’re driving. He’s in the sidecar rocking his Doggles. In reality, any car will do. He loves being a copilot.
Cuddling preferences: He’s not picky. Big spoon, little spoon, or blanket. All cuddles are good cuddles.
Favorite snooze locations: Sometimes it’s the couch, sometimes it’s in the human bed, sometimes he wakes up at midnight and tucks himself into his crate. Basically wherever he falls asleep because...have you ever tried to move a sleeping Rhinoceros?
Sharing preferences: Loves to share all his toys with humans and dogs alike. Prefers to have meals by himself so he can eat in peace.
What he knows: Sit. Paw. Switch paws – we know, very fancy.
What he’s working on: Not pulling on the leash (and boy is he strong!), leave it, recall.
Kids: 12+ please. Though he is a big ole’ ham, he does not want anyone around his food bowl while eating and some kiddos have a pesky habit of not following the rules...
Dogs: Definitely, but he is more-so looking for a chill cuddle buddy than a rambunctious play partner.
Cats: No go.
Crate trained: Yep.
House trained: The only house-trained house hippo we’ve ever heard about.
Ideal people: Home a lot. Dedicated to Netflix binging and cuddles sessions. Committed to daily adventures (take your Blu to work days count). Up for lifelong allergy and eye maintenance.
Ideal dwelling: Ample windows that create ample sun spots.

Blu is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. He’s available for adoption to residents of CT and surrounding states. If you’re interested in adopting, please complete an application from omdrescue.org.
