My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dixie is Adopted

Dixie is fostered in Valley View Ohio and her adoption donation is 300.

Meet Dixie-Doodle, as she is lovingly called by her foster family. Dixie is not actually a doodle, rather a petite, 4-year-old, female, cocker spaniel straight out of Amishville puppy house of horror, aka -- a dog farming mill. (PSA – please adopt or research breeders thoroughly before bringing home a new dog home. Puppy mills are a real thing and many online sites showcasing beautiful puppies are the products of terrible farming situations like Dixie came from.)

Dixie comes to our rescue with some severe emotional trauma and fear-based tendencies. This is not a “just add water” dog that you can take on long walks in the evening and expect to jump up on your lap and cuddle. She is terrified of everything and while going through some intense socialization and basic skills training at her foster home, she will be a flight risk for whoever adopts her for some time.

When posting dogs like Dixie there is always the fear someone will see her beautiful chocolate eyes and think they are the perfect home, because they can sense something in how she looks that speaks to them. In many cases there is nothing wrong with this. However, for Dixie’s sake, we will not adopt her out to just anyone because they like how she looks. She will require months of encouragement, socialization, and confidence building.

Dixie is very sweet dispositioned, but like many dogs from puppy mills, her true personality will not blossom until she can let down some of her fear. For that reason alone, we will not adopt to homes with small children, even though she has shown no sign of aggression.

Mandatory for consideration as a potential adopter:

· You must have at least one other dog that is similar in size with calm energy. Mill dogs do not do well as single dogs in a family. They have spent their life surrounded by dogs and find comfort in packs.

· Mill dog experience is preferred but not required. If you have not worked with mill dogs in the past, we will require proof of registration for socialization and confidence building classes through a reputable, accredited training facility. We are happy to offer suggestions on some of our preferred trainers if you don’t know where to start.

· Must have a fully enclosed fenced yard

· Must commit to keeping Dixie on a leash at all times, even in the house, while she is adapting to her new environment

· She is already crate trained and to facilitate an easier adjustment we will require that you have a crate and use it during the decompression period, but we recommend lifelong.

· Understanding and Patience!!! Dixie will take time. She is afraid of people and it will take a lot of patience to earn her trust. Also, Dixie is not fully house trained, though her foster mom says she is getting a lot better. Understand if you have carpets, they will get broken in by Dixie. It’s not a behavioral problem, she just doesn’t understand.

Mill dogs are very special dogs. They have lived lives that are heartbreaking and cruel, and we want them to have the best possible outcome.
Dixie is a very special little dog and we look forward to bringing her out of her past and into a tail-wagging future.
Vet references will be conducted as well as a home inspection.
The foster family that Dixie is currently placed with includes a licensed trainer and they will be happy to help you through the initial adoption process and provide tips for more successful transitions.

Dixie is current on vaccinations, had a dental, is heartworm negative and microchipped.
