Here's what the humans have to say about me:
In Bloomington, IL
Charlie Bear is a very sweet and stunning 4 year old male, Red-Tri Australian Shepherd weighing around 60 lbs. He loves to cuddle and snuggle with his human and will never turn down a big ole belly rub. He knows how to sit and lay down, and he is learning to "wait" and "stay."
Charlie Bear is potty trained and loves being outside to run around and bark at the birds. He is very treat-motivated and will shake his wiggle bottom profusely for a little snack! Charlie doesn't like to share his stuff with other dogs. He has a tendency to guard his toys, food and treats from other dogs, so being fed in a secluded space or his kennel is best if there are other dogs around. Charlie enjoys going to his kennel at his leisure, so keeping the door open for him to have a safe space will allow him to feel comfortable.
Mr. Charlie would do best with an adopter that is both calm and a strong leader since Charlie does have some anxiety when it comes to new sounds, new places, and newer people. It is preferred that Charlie be an only dog in his new home, given his guarding behavior of food, bones and toys.
Charlie’s foster home is teaching him how to calm down when faced with new sounds and experiences. However, his forever human should know that his anxiety manifests itself in a nervous pacing and barking when he gets too excited. Charlie simply needs someone who is patient and firm in these areas of continued training. He is comforted by his human(s) when they ask him to sit and show him that everything is okay.
He LOVES to run and play outside and has put on a little quarantine weight so a home with a nice, large fenced-in yard is needed for this lovebug to live his best life! He loves bones, toys and would play tug-of-war or fetch all day, if he could! He has done okay when being left alone for short periods of time, but would prefer an adopter who is home more often than not. Charlie does ok with cats, but a home without them would be best since he can sometimes redirect his nervous energy onto kitties.
Charlie’s forever family should only use positive reinforcement when doing any training with him. He does not respond well to punishment or any negative reinforcement as those harsh devices can amp up his anxiety.
Charlie Bear is up-to-date on all vaccinations, neutered, microchipped and on monthly preventatives for heartworms, fleas and ticks. Monthly preventatives are required for adoption.
Charlie is fostered in Bloomington, IL.
