My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

PENDING ADOPTION!
Meet Toby!

Breed: Beagle mix
Sex: male
Age: 1 year
Neutered: yes
Housetrained: yes
Weight: 23 lbs

Energy level: Toby is a puppy with high energy. But when he’s tired, he conks out for a while.

How he moves: Toby waddles like a bulldog. But he’s also quite active. He chases and wrestles with another dog. Even after somersaults, he jumps right back up. Perhaps his bones are rubbery? He definitely has a bounciness to his step.

His ideal home: Toby needs a home with another playful dog whom he can watch and learn from. He currently wrestles and plays chase with another dog in his foster home throughout the day. Being able to play with another dog has helped him out of his shell. You probably won’t want to leave a lot of things on the floor, as he has been known to steal. Toby will need a family that appreciates his sensitive nature and wacky habits.

Size: Toby is one of the more low-ridery beagle mixes. His back is perhaps 12 inches above the ground.

What sets him apart: Toby is a beagle with the energy and playfulness of a puppy who actually is not barky. He generally does not bark or howl like so many of his beagle brethren. He’s on the quiet side.

What we especially admire about him: Toby has undergone a stunning transformation. When his foster family got him, he was shaking, skittish, and scared. We don’t know what trauma he endured in his past. But he seemed terrified of everything for the first 3 or 4 days. If you popped the top of a soda, the sound would send him running. He did not trust people. He wouldn’t eat much. Today he is much more playful and relaxed. He eats like a champ. And he likes his people. But we should note that he is more sensitive than average. Recently, the clink of a dog tag against the water bowl startled him. But he recovers much faster now.

Something unexpected: Toby is a hoarder. He collects things—like toys from around the yard—and will put them together under a bush. Or he will get busy going up and down stairs. Before you know it, he has assembled a pile of shoes and chew toys in the living room.

Sense of touch: We are touched by how Toby wants to be pet all the time. He adores being pet anywhere, but especially his belly and ears. And if you won’t pet or scratch him, he wants to be touching you. He seems to find comfort in this. Once you start petting his belly, he won’t let you stop. He may tap your hand with his paw to let you know that he wants you to keep going.

Strangers: If a stranger reaches for Toby, he’ll step back. But 5 minutes later, he may be your friend.
When someone knocks or rings the doorbell, Toby does not bark. He’ll stand back and see what happens, sussing out the situation. Then he’ll slowly approach. He is perhaps more wary than average.

Best described as: Toby is a playful and goofy pup who keeps himself busy.

What we love most: He makes you want to pick him up and cuddle him. Toby will keep you entertained. His foster parents still laugh when he walks into a room with yet another shoe, acting like it is acceptable behavior.

What he loves most: Belly rubs, chew toys, companionship.

What he knows: He comes when you call his name. When he’s not too distracted, he will sit for you. He tends to be more compliant when he is calm or tired out after a walk.

Leash skills: Toby is happy to be out and about with the foster parents’ other dogs. When alone on the leash, he may hesitate when it comes to leaving the other dogs. And you may need to encourage him to walk alone.

People: He likes to be in the room with you.

Kids: No caveats. Toby is great with kids of all ages.

Cats: Toby has not been cat-tested.

Dogs: Toby loves meeting other dogs. And when he goes up to a dog, this seems to be what he’s saying: “Hi, I’m Toby. Don’t you want to play with me?” He did well meeting dogs at a brewery the other day.

Car rides: Toby rides well in the car. To keep him safe, he will need a harness for the car, as he will try to get access to your lap so he can look out the window.

Housetraining: Toby has the occasional accident. After he got neutered, he backtracked. Now he is almost there at 90 percent. With a routine of regular outings, we expect he will be fully housetrained.

Medical: Toby is scheduled to have surgery in mid July to correct his cherry eye in both eyes.

Crate trained: Toby is not a fan of the crate but could probably get used to it. He has been sleeping in bed with either dogs or kids.

Their loss/your gain: Toby’s foster parents would have loved to adopt him, but they have maxed out on dogs and still want to leave space to foster.
