Here's what the humans have to say about me:
"ANDY" -- is a 1 year old, neutered, male, purebred Border Collie that came to from a NH shelter. The original owners purchased him from a pet store. From what is known, Andy was kept outside all day in an invisible fence with a small dog for company. At night Andy was brought inside and crated, so he hasn't had much socialization with people, and he is very shy and somewhat fearful, particularly of men. Andy craves affection and comes for snuggles regularly when the other dogs are not too close. He is bonding quickly and responds to quiet direction and lots of positive reinforcement. He is up to date on all his vaccinations, heartworm negative and on preventative.
Andy is blossoming quickly in his foster home environment. While he is still a sweet and snuggly boy, he is also an energetic young BC. Andy needs space to run and regular exercise during the day. A fence will be a requirement for his adoption because of his energy level. Andy is still shy outside of his comfort zone but is improving there also with continued exposure to people and dogs.
Andy can be a little pushy with other dogs but he just wants to play. Once the other dogs let him know that they don't appreciate his attention, Andy will play with them quite nicely and enjoys running, chasing, and wrestling with them. His favorite game is tug. He will attempt to herd dogs and people that excite him, and for this reason we will not place him in a home with children under 13. Andy also barks when he is excited but can be easily distracted with a short time out from the exciting activity. His barking has already decreased significantly with management.
Andy learns quickly, has begun clicker training with his foster mom, and knows most of the basic commands, but he will need more basic obedience. A positive based obedience class is strongly suggested for Andy after his adoption. Andy walks nicely on leash with a regular harness and if frightened will flatten himself to the ground. He is not reliable at this point off leash outside of a securely fenced in area. This will improve over time with patience and training. He will be a super dog for the right person and/or the right mix of other dogs. He could be a candidate for a sport such as agility or obedience with patient and consistent training from his new adopters. Andy has not been tested on cats but will chase running animals so would probably only work with a very dog savvy cat.
Andy is being fostered in Massachusetts.

IMPORTANT: You should always choose a breed/dog that matches your CURRENT lifestyle. Border Collies are not for everyone, and contrary to popular misconception, most are NOT typically “great family pets” and “wonderful with children.” (If that were true, there would not be nearly as many in rescue!)
Before inquiring about adopting a dog from us, we recommend you do a little research to find out if a Border Collie really is right for your family. For this information, and details on our adoption process, please see our web site www.NEBCR.org.
Please note that you MUST FIRST fill out an adoption application AND have a home visit BEFORE being considered for any NEBCR dog. Our rescue representatives cannot consider you to adopt ANY dog until your application has been submitted and approved.
For more about Andy (including rescue contact information), and for more about other dogs currently available for adoption, please see our web site www.NEBCR.org.
