Here's what the humans have to say about me:
My name is Cafe and I have been listening to the humans tell my story so I know it by heart. I am in Houston, Texas and I seem to have gotten lost and I was hanging around someone's house for a few days. What can I say they were feeding me and I was hungry. I was not microchipped and they posted me on some sites but no one answered the sites, whatever that is. So I was taken to the shelter, this is the part I hate. I really really disliked this place, it was loud and cold. The nice humans would come visit me and I heard them say I was on the euthanasia list, I am not sure what that list is since I was saved from it but it must not be a good list because everyone was talking low and scary and when they said I was saved from the list everyone was laughing and happy for me. Then I went to a boarding place and it was no fun. They only took me out of my crate for potty time. I am so thankful that this lady they call her Cuddle Buddies, well anyway she came and picked me up and brought me to my foster mom and dad. They keep telling me how I am doing amazing and soon I will have my own forever family and home. I can not wait!! Now let me tell you a little about myself. The most important thing I should mention before I get started is that I am a very good boy if you just give me time.
My name is Cafe, although I have been known to also answer to “puppy". I am a 3 yr old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I weigh about 65 lbs. I was heartworm positive but I have been taking medicine and I am better. It has not slowed me down one bit. I am known to be quite scared of humans at first, which may lead people to think I'm aggressive, but I promise I'm not - I'm just scared. I don't bite, even if I get close when barking out of fear. Treats will definitely bring me closer to you and investigate you more, and with some patience and gentle words, I will warm up and be your closest ally.
I love, love, LOVE showing you that I can give you my paw, and one of my favorite things to do when I'm comfy with you is to lean on you while you pet me, and then just collapse and lay at your feet. I know sit, shake, down, and no (with food in particular), and have been working on stay (with treat motivation) and leave it. I also love putting my nose to the ground and investigating, just so I can know my new area and learn new scents.
At first, I may pull when on a walk, but a little patience and a gentle tug with “heel” will help remind me to walk a little slower. I don't know how I would react with another dog, but right now, I do get animated and want to be near. I think a slow integration would be wise as I have little experience dealing with other dogs.
I can be a picky eater, and I kindly ask to please give me fresh food. I know it may be a little more expensive, but you will thank yourself later at bathroom time.
With my last foster parents, it took me more time to warm up to the father than the mother, but he was patient. I got scared when he maybe approached me too quickly or rubbed me in a way that reminded me of another time, and I back off scared. He just went about his day and I came to realize that not all humans are here to hurt me. I don't have any experience with young children, so I would really like to be around adults, for now.
I love licking my closest family in the face to show them that I care about and thank them. I am crate trained and house broken, to the point where I have been able to be alone for up to 6 hours and not have an accident (although I would greatly appreciate not being left alone like that often). I love being around my loved ones.
I would really enjoy a family that is active and would take me outside a lot, whether walking on trails or going to the lake. I bet if you got me used to it, I would run next to you.
I want a stable home with parents that will love me and be patient as I transition into their family and home. I promise you will not regret it.
