Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Ever thought why can’t I just have a beagle and a lab all in one? Well, you can if you adopt Otis! Born last September, Otis may look like a full-blooded lab, but he was born to a full-blood beagle mama. At 8 months, Otis is about 35 lbs which our vets predicts means he will be around 50lbs full grown.
Otis came to HERO as a puppy we named Hippo and was adopted in December to a family that worked hard on Otis’s socialization and loved him dearly, but unfortunately as Otis grew bigger, he became too much puppy for the family’s cat and small dog sister. Otis didn’t mean to scare them, but he is a puppy and wants to play like a puppy and as older pets, his energy and playfulness was too much…plus there was a real potential for them to be hurt which caused the family to make a tough decision to return him to rescue.
Back at rescue, Otis is fitting in with the pack nicely and spends 50% of his dad playing with his foster fur siblings and 50% lounging with his people. Otis really seems like a beagle in a lab body! He howls like a beagle, sniffs the yard for hours like a beagle, cuddles with the other pups like a beagle and loves attention from his people.
Otis is friendly with all furry friends, but we would like to adopt him to a home with a larger fur brother or sister to make sure his big dog puppy energy does not overwhelm smaller fur babies. With proper attention and exercise, Otis would also make a fabulous only pet. Otis does take a moment to warm up to new fur friends, so would need some confidence training and assurance when visiting a dog park (we just walked him around the yard with the pack and in just a few minutes he was part of the pack). Otis also loves toys including chew bones, stuffed toys and balls (he is awesome at playing fetch)!
Prior to coming back to rescue, his family had a large, unfenced yard so they worked diligently on his recall and boundaries which he did amazingly well with as a young pup. This may be partially because Otis loves his people so much, he doesn’t like to be alone which means he is less likely to wander too far from his family.
Otis does well in his crate during feeding and when we are away from the home, he has been allowed to sleep in bed since being adopted which he is lucky enough to continue this practice at rescue by sleeping with his foster grandma at night. Though Otis can be a bit of a bed hog (he likes to stretch out), he does sleep through the night without issue.
Otis is housetrained with a doggy door and/or regular potty breaks. When adopted the only accidents he had were by the back door, so he knew where to go, just couldn’t always hold it long enough to make it out the door. Like most pups, Otis may have accidents when adjusting to a new schedule, but he is one smart boy and we expect him to get used to a new routine very quickly.
