My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATE: Poppy is being fostered in a potential forever home. We will update asap.........Poppy, also known as Hoppy Poppy has been with us for a few months now. She was trapped last fall by another rescue after being on the run for weeks in northern Illinois and turned over to us when not claimed. At the time she was a big flight/escape risk and the rescue that caught her knew we had the ability to keep her safely contained. When she arrived we thought we saw a darling little Pyr mix girl who was shy and undersocialized like many we have had over the years, but something was a little different. This little girl had springs in her legs, endless energy and just a little different attitude. Thinking it might be helpful to know what her "mix" was, we sent in a wisdom panel. Much to our surprise, Poppy came back purebred Maremma.
Poppy has come along way in trusting people since she arrived but any adopter will need to be prepared for a long period of gaining her trust and accept that she will most likely be a shy girl with new people and a flight risk if she were to escape. She still plays the "stay at arms length" game at times except at mealtime. She is very food motivated which is a plus. Any men in the house will have to be patient and expect to work harder than the women for her trust.
We are looking for an adult only home (Maremma experience would be great) in a more rural setting with a taller/ securely fenced yard. Poppy plays with every male Pyr here at the rescue and would benefit from a well socialized male canine cmpanion who likes to play...play a lot.
Poppy has learned to accept and walk on leash and will now jump into the van and rides well. She has been formally groomed several times and although some things there scare her she is a good girl for them.
Poppy is very playful, energetic and sometimes boisterous but also a gentle soul. She is good with kitties (inside) and we have witnessed her sniff and walk away from a fledgling crow that she could have easily dispatched.
