My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*Precious Piper is in ADL Houston Foster Program and will be available to travel in July*
Precious Piper (10yo, 60lb) found herself at the city shelter after her "owners" decided they had no use for her anymore. Scared and sad, she shut down and refused to eat, drink, or even walk, breaking rescuers' hearts. We knew we had to help her learn to trust and teach her how to be happy again. Piper spent the first few weeks at her new foster family's home decompressing in their garage, sleeping in an open kennel or on a blanket and pottying on potty pads. She allowed her new foster mom to pet her in the kennel but would run away if she was outside of the kennel. It was 3 weeks before she ventured out of the garage on her own, prompted by cheese slices and deli meat. Her foster mom soon realized she will do just about anything for a meaty snack. Piper learned that she was allowed in the house and even had her own fluffy bed to sleep on, and that she could potty outside in the yard and come back in whenever she wanted. Again, snacks helped. Piper made instant friends with her new animal siblings, a male basset hound and two male cats, and is even happy to eat and sleep next to them. She's learning that the loud noises made by her human foster siblings (ages 5 and 2) aren't that scary and don't mean that she's in danger, and that the leash means a car ride, which she enjoys. She's still hesitant to approach people (unless they have some yummy rotisserie chicken), but is very happy to lay nearby and watch them between naps. Piper will eventually be a low maintenance, easy going girl who mostly keeps to herself and doesn't cause any trouble. She likes chewing on yummy toys and basking in the sun, and she rarely makes a peep. All she needs is someone patient and loving to show her that she's safe. Piper's ideal home will have someone who works from home or is home most of the day so that she gets used to them easily. The more she's around her people, the faster she will trust them. A quiet home without young kids would be best, but she also does just fine with children as long as they respect her boundaries and allow her to just be near them. She would benefit greatly from having a friendly doggy sibling to show her the ropes as she learns to be a house dog -- cats are ok too. She's not quite ready for a high-energy, go-all-the-time family and would prefer to just relax around the house most of the day.

Albert's Dog Lounge is a transporting dog rescue, meaning that we rescue many of our dogs from high kill shelters in areas of dog overpopulation. We are a specialty rescue focusing primarily on senior and special needs dogs. The vast majority of our dogs come from the Houston, TX area where we have an entire team of volunteers, coordinators, and fosters. We do also work with local shelters, rescues, and owners. If you apply for a dog that is currently in our local Houston program, we will work to get your dog transported to WI as quickly as possible. We ask that you have patience during this time of uncertainty and unprecedented dog adoptions nationwide.

Learn more about Albert's Dog Lounge, our mission, and adoption policies by visiting Albertsdoglounge.org.

Our process includes an approved application, reference checks, a homevisit, and then a meet and greet with the dog. Adoption fee is $275.
