My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Y’know, this life really is amazing. One minute you’re lying on a sunny windowsill, trying to decide which to eat first: the wet or the dry. Then just like that, things are all upside down. You’re out in the street, fighting for scraps and praying the stray dogs or the raccoons don’t catch your scent.

I’m not going into what my original home was like. Why would I? What’s gone is gone. Time only moves in one direction, right? Let’s just say at one time, I was Top Cat. My people loved me and I loved them back. But it’s all different now so I won’t dwell on the past. I’ve made it this far and it has to be for a reason. Even after all that’s happened in the past couple of years, I’ve got my health and I’ve got my faith. So let’s look to the future, you and I, eh?

My name’s Gingersnap but my street friends call me Sherlock. That’s because the old injury over my right eye makes me look very wise and kinda like I’ve just figured out a secret….deduced something, y’know? And well, maybe I have.

The conclusion I’ve come to based on the evidence is, not all humans are bad. Most are really cool. Like, for instance, the lady who used to feed me every day at the same spot in the park. Heck, if it weren’t for her, I would never have made it through the winter! She’d bring great food and fresh water, and she’d talk sweetly to me, like I was an old friend. So I decided I should encourage that behavior by waiting for her each afternoon on the park bench where she liked to sit. And, just like I planned it, she’d sit with me and stroke my fur and cuddle with me for awhile each day. That one-on-one was just what I needed to keep my spirits up and my faith strong.

That lady knew another lady who, one day, took me to her place in the country. It was a building with a whole bunch of cats in cages. She set me up with a clean cage with bedding and a hiding spot and plenty of good food and water and each day she comes in to clean, feed and chit-chat with me and the rest of the cats. So I worked my charm on her just like I did with the first lady. I roll on my back and use my soft-paws to hold her hand as she strokes my ears. Then I give her that “Sherlock look,” y’know, kinda coy and playful like Paul Newman. And sure enough, now she’s working for me, trying to find me a forever home! She says I am too nice a cat to live in a cage or a barn.

So now I’m supposed to tell you about my personality and my health status. Well, I get along with all sorts of people and with other cats as well as long as they’re not social miscreants like the one who ripped up my eye). And even dogs are ok, as long as they aren’t stalking me or stealing my food. I’m outgoing, confident and very affectionate and would like nothing more than to lie on the couch next to you and read whatever it is you’re reading, watch whatever it is you’re watching, eat whatever it is you’re eating. I’ve tested negative for cat-diseases and been vaccinated and neutered, too. Clean as a monk with my personal hygiene and smarter than most anyone’s honor student.

Hey, at 7 years of age and with my street experience, I’m no kitten, but I’m no fool, either. I’m a realistic adult looking for a real relationship and a real home. I had a place in someone’s heart and home once before and I can do it again. Just gotta keep the faith! Interested? Enquire at 518-727-8591….and tell ‘em Sherlock sent ya!
