My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hey, I’m Hemi! I'm 3 years old and my foster mom believes that I'm possibly a Rottweiler or Bernese Mountain Dog mix. I'm shy in the beginning, but once I open up I'm the ultimate cuddle bug! I also love to lean, and stand with my paws on your shoulders to get hugs. I tend to forget I am not a lap dog and will lay on top of you when we cuddle. I find comfort when I get to bury my head between people's legs, whether you are standing or sitting - if I can't see you, you can’t see me.

Sometimes I get little spurts of energy and I'll roll around on the couch like a nut to get everyone's attention. I love to sleep all day and go for long walks and I really love car rides! I'm amazing on a leash and will stay by your side and stop when you stop. I do need some training when it comes to commands, but I'm slowly starting to get the hang of “sit”. We live by the fire station and during my walks we have discovered I love to howl with the sirens. I usually don't try to interact with other dogs on walks, but a nice look is always needed. If I see a squirrel I will want to play with them (forewarning). I'm great in crowds; I've been to a few BBQs with my foster mom and I'm always the highlight of everyone's day!

I am a solid 70+ lbs, but could use a little fattening up. Dog food doesn't really excite me, but when the kibble is soaked in chicken bouillon I will inhale my food. I don’t really like people food, so your counters and floor are safe - unless it is chicken or fries. I do have a little bit of anxiety, so I take Trazodone twice a day to help me through my day. My foster mom has been working on crate training with me, but that still needs a little work. I'm also very good left out while no one is home. I'm 100% potty trained and have never had an accident in the house. I do have a quirk about floors, though - I really don't want to walk on wood floors, but if you put blankets down, I'll walk across the floor fine.

I'm mostly a pretty great guy, but there are some things you need to know about me. I do not know how to play with toys and I should stay away from them, as I can become possessive. You should know that I tend to become agitated when I am being forced to do something I do not want to do, like pulling me from my collar, forcing me to move me off couches or beds, or if you get too close to my private parts (I do like chest rubs, though, so it can be a little tricky). Most of the time I'll growl first, but sometimes I just snap when being forced into stuff I do not like. Also, sometimes I just don't like certain people. I don't seem to have an obvious trigger, so it's best that anyone new who approaches me comes slowly and speaks softly.

I would do best in an adult-only home, without other dogs or cats. I will need a human who's able to read my behavior and understand my likes and dislikes.
