5/1/23: Aldo saw the vet and is in overall good health for his age (he is now approx 11 years old). He has some typical geriatric issues such as arthritic in the hind end and "wasting" of his muscle mass in the back end. He had a couple of hot spot areas near his tail that are resolving and a fatty cyst that we aspirated last year and it was determined to be benign on his back leg. He still is a spry old guy. He loves to ride and walks well on a leash. He is awesome with dogs of all sizes and is people friendly, with a sweet disposition. He reminds us of a cat as he can be aloof at tikes and likes his quiet space away from everything. He comes to you when he wants some affection but is not needy. Very easy keeper and minds his business but when its time to ride, hes ready for an adventure. Just an all around good dog. If you like the older gents, Aldo may he the perfect fit for you! And while it is unknown how many years this guy has left, he definitely deserves the good life in his golden years!
Aldo and his brother from another mother,, Charlie, came to us about a week ago when their owners were evicted from their home and were left with no options but to move out of state into their parent's home and they would not allow pets. Their owners had thought that they had a home for Aldo and Charlie but at the last minute, the person began backing out of taking them. Their owners were desperate to find these boys a safe place to go as they had to be out of their home that next morning. We agreed to help them.. The boys are settling in to life without their people and are hoping that someone will see their sweet faces and fall head over heels for them. They are both older boys. Aldo is a 9 year old black lab mix with some grass allergies (from what we were told) which causes him to lose hair during the spring months, specifically (vet feels that it could also be related to flea allergies as they did have a significant flea infestation, which we have treated him for, so we should know if his coat condition improves and the hair loss resolves)and Charlie is a 7 year old lab/cur mix. We will be getting them updated on their yearly vetting on 4/22/2021 and they will be up for adoption. On vet exam, Aldo was determined to have an ear infection, which he was treated for and hookworms which were treated with drontal. Overall, he is healthy however due to advancing age, he is becoming a bit stiff and arthritic and has developed some lumps- one on his eyelid, which causes his eye to goop since it rubs on his eye( like an entropian would) and he also has a couple of lumps on his legs. The vet stated they may be nothing or they may be cancerous. The only way to know for certain is to biopsy.The rescue will attempt to raise funds to have the tumors removed and biopsiedhowever we may not have the funds to have this rather expensive procedure done. Both boys are neutered and were house dogs. We were told that they are housebroken, although we never guarantee this. Their owners stated that they love to ride and don't like the leash but will walk on one. Aldo is a go getter and likes to go, even though he is older. He would enjoy spending his retirement years with a nice yard to frolic in with a comfy bed to cuddle up in when playtime was done.. Although Aldo's body may be starting to show his age (arent all of ours too?), his mind is still sharp and youthful. He deserves a stress-free retirement home where he can live his life out in happiness and peace. Their owners stated that they have been raised with cats and bunnies and have zero issues with anyone or anything they have met or been around. They may be shy and standoffish initially but that is very normal for any dog who has everything they have known pulled out from under them and are experiencing huge changes in their lives. But they adjust fast and bounce back quite well.just give them some time to understand and acclimate to their new life.. Aldo's adoption fee will be $175 to help cover the cost of his vetting and daily care while with us. Aldo is eligible for our seniors for seniors program and if adopted by a senior, his adoption fee is only $100.
