Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Maybe you have looked at Harper’s profile before. Maybe you said, “Oh I will never love a chihuahua like him again.” Or “I have heard about chihuahuas and I would never put up with that attitude.”
PLEASE READ HIS PROFILE!!!
Well let’s summarize - Harper is the type of love you earn. And it returns 10,000 fold. He is CUTE as a button. Study, fierce, loving, active, hyper, opinionated, stubborn, devoted (It breaks my heart to see his devotion to me and know he has to find a forever home.)
I am Harper’s foster momma. And I have had Harper 3 weeks tomorrow. When he came to my house. I sat on the floor with him. He crawled onto my lap, even gave kisses. I had been told he was a little devil at the shelter. So I was giving him time.
His family had given him up when they had to move to assisted living.
He weebled his way into my soul. And I gave him time to just get to know me. And as soon as I reached for him to pet him. He turned into a rabid sock puppet like the alien emerging from the antagonist’s chest in a 1970’s movie. Seeing the humor in that is ½ the battle.
Harper wanted to give attention but didn’t know how to receive it. He needed to feel safe and unthreatened. And that is NOT something that is going to happen in a few hours, or a week!
Now after 3 weeks. He is constantly under my feet, in my lap or under the ladder, or in front of the blower, even wants to help me mow the yard. Cause I can’t be out of his site.
At night he sleeps right by my head or in the small of my back. His favorite things are treats, walks and laying in the sun.
I do keep a leash on Harper. Cause I don’t want him to ever feel that I will hurt him. Now I do correct him too. And he is learning. Man is he stubborn! I try and also step on the leash when he is near, talk sweet nothings and positive reinforcement. I keep pets and head rubs short. So he knows a hand does not hurt.
He was chasing the cats hard when he came. Now I can say “Don’t chase kitties” and he knows he is not supposed to. (But being the turd he is doesn’t mean he won’t try if I am not looking)
As for other dogs. We have a big golden retriever and a small maltese, his size. (8 pounds) He loves our maltese. And even tried to sleep with her in the same dog beds during the day. She wanted NOTHING of it. I think he would do wonderfully with a SMALL dog.
As for a large dog. Our golden is a big whimp. And his size and activity level really upset Harper at first. Now it’s a weird style of play. Harper chases him. And our golden knows he can’t be caught. I am not sure what Harper would do if he caught him. I think if you have a calm big dog it will be fine. But you will have to monitor him. And help him learn.
Who wants to invest in love? Cause that is what Harper will return to you. In time. He will bite or snap at you and other people. So you have to understand that he needs time. And with time he is an amazing boy.
Best suited for someone who is active, walks, has a yard and devoted to his silliness. Gosh we love him.
