My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Oh Leif Erikson....the adventuresome life you lead, little buddy. The stories you can tell. Leif came to us as an owner surrender after suffering a ruptured disk in his back. His mom knew he had much more life to live and made the hard sacrifice of surrendering him to rescue in order to get the surgery he needed. Fast foward a couple of months and Leif is now on the mend. He has gone from totally paralyzed in the rear to walking around and wanting to run and play so badly that he can taste it. He is still a little wobbly in the rear but gaining strength with amazing speed. Leif still hasn't regained bladder control, but is easily expressed. It actually makes him the world's most perfectly house trained little guy. And don't worry if you don't know how to do this b/c we can teach you. It's super easy and you don't get messy at all.

As far as his personality, this little guy is just so incredibly smart and twice as comical. Leif loves to watch TV and tell you about each program or commercial that has any animals on it. He will also carry on conversations with you when you talk to him. Some say sassy....others say chatty. HAHA. Leif is a professional traveler in the car and LOVES to go as much as possible. He is a little shy around new people, but once he warms up (the stage fright subsides), it's all charm and charisma. He knows several basic commands like sit, lay down, stay. He is ridiculously smart and would really do well with someone who exercises his brain as well as his body.

Leif does have a high prey drive and will not do well with cats or birds. He likes other dogs and enjoys playing with them as well. He's been rather entertained by his little fur sister at his foster home. Leif does NOT like to stay in a crate when you're gone, but he seems to do just fine when left alone in the house. He will sleep in a crate at night, as long as it's in the room with you. He'd much rather sleep in the big bed, but his surgeon hasn't released him for any such activity yet. (Too much risk of jumping down.)

If you are interested in adopting Leif Erikson, you can fill out an application right on our website! Go to our online adoption application. Leif Erikson's adoption fee is $350. All adoption fees go directly to veterinary care for DREAM dachshunds. All of our dogs will go to his / her new home microchipped, altered, heartworm tested, up to date on vaccinations, and all other medical needs addressed. Most dogs' veterinary expenses are greater than our adoption fees.

DREAM is an all-volunteer rescue group. We focus on the metro Atlanta area and can assist throughout the state of Georgia. Because we are all volunteers, we can consider applications only within an hour of these areas. DREAM does not recommend purebred dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a doxie's back.
