My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Bobby is a really great 9 year old[01/06/2012], 35 pound (working daily on his weight loss journey), dog.

He was originally purchased off of kijiji by his owner a few months ago, and it was soon discovered that Bobby was an anxious dog, and with the owner working 12 hour days, it was not a good fit.

Bobby has been great since joining Mattie's Place. We have put him on medication to help with his anxiousness (Trazadone) and he's now on an excellent exercise routine and he's really calmed down and settled in. We believe that once he's settled into his forever home and gets continued daily exercise (long walks or good backyard playtimes) he will be able to move off his medications. We will send him with a supply of meds for the transition.

Bobby is an alarm barker and will bark when left alone, so a family that is home most often or can take their dog to work is best. Also, housing without shared walls so barking doesn't annoy any neighbours.

UPDATE: APRIL 7, 2021 ... BOBBY IS DOING REALLY WELL WITH HIS BARKING WHEN ALONE AND IS MAINTAINING STINTS OF BEING ALONE 1 HOUR LIKE A CHAMPION WITH A COUPLE BARKS FOR A MINUTE WITH LEAVING THEN HE'S FINE AND RELAXED WHEN HIS FOSTER COMES HOME

Bobby is also super undersocialized with other dogs, having never in his 9 years been with other dogs, so for now, a home without other dogs or cats (he has prey drive) would be best. With the assistance of a professional trainer to help him become more social with dogs, he will overcome his excitement with seeing other canines and rude behaviour when trying to meet them.

FROM HIS FOSTER MOM:

Honestly he is lovely - if I didn't live in a duplex where you can hear the neighbours I'd want to keep him he's really such a sweet and loving dog!

He's been pretty chill with me and happy to play with his toys and sleep most of the day so not nearly as velcro as the last foster.

Observations:

He is very alert and noises do startle him - he has a tendency to bark whenever he hears something close to the house. I do think this likely means he'd find it hard living in a condo or apartment with people walking down the hallway.

He's pretty food motivated so likely trainable, but it's something to be conscious of

He likes people - and is quite gentle with them unless you're play stealing his toys.

He'd likely do fine in a house with respectful kids.

He does react to other dogs, with barking and lunging only if they come into his direct path. I think it's playful though, other dogs don't find it scary and don't bark back and still want to come over I just don't know what will happen so have avoided it by telling other owners he's a new foster so I'd prefer if they didn't approach.

He also will go for squirrels, rats, and birds! I'm small and in his harness he won't lunge hard enough to move me but new owners just need to be a bit alert on walks. He loves his harness though, so I'd just always have him in one on walks personally.

Bobby is a very lovable dog who will quickly win you over. He's got these big cartoon eyes, that just scream love me. It's no wonder he's a little chunky... those eyes and his passion for food are hard to resist!

Bobby is the perfect energy level - he loves going for as many walks as he can and has a lot of pep in his step as he sniffs around the neighbourhood. But he also loves to sleep from 10pm to 8am and then nap throughout the day near his foster mom while she works at her desk. You can usually tell his mood by his cute cinnamon bun tail (he's part pug) - when it's curled up he's ready to take on the world and when it's relaxed it's time for bed.

He's got all the basic commands down, from sit to stay - but he may have a bit of selective hearing if he sees that you're making something yummy. For a guy with short legs, he's surprisingly tall when he jumps up so make sure food is kept on kitchen counters.

Despite his size, Bobby has a really booming voice - he will bark if he hears someone approaching the house or if he sees another dog on a walk. But he's not aggressive with people, the second he sees who is coming in the door he's all tail wags and greetings. It's just his way of letting his humans know that someone is there.

Overall he's a really sweet and lovely adult dog. He's smart, energetic, and playful - he'll make a great companion for someone who wants a friend throughout the day.

As of today, though our protocols could change tomorrow, we are still moving forward with adoptions. Our process has changed from some of the previous elements: We are a registered animal welfare organization, so we are deemed an essential service.

All paperwork completed online, video home visits, meet and greets outside respecting social distancing, leashes/collars/supplies wiped down and disinfected (GermiCide 3 wipes), disinfectant on the dog prior to handoff (Aqueos wipes for dogs)

-----------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in his current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.

We do not specifically kid/cat test our dogs when they arrive at Mattie's Place. That just wouldn't be fair to the dog or child/cat.

We also do not claim, endorse, suggest or hint at, that any of our dogs are hypoallergenic, low shed or no-shed.

Adoption fee includes: spay/neuter, deworming, defleaing, vaccinations, nose to tail health exam, leash|collar, 6 months of preventative based on season/need, DNA test for entertainment purposes, dishes, poop bags, food and any extras she has accumulated in foster care.
