Update 11/05/09: Sydney has recovered from her recent leg surgery and spay and is doing great! Now that she is feeling better, she is showing what a playful dog she is - she loves to play with one of her foster brothers and the cats. She also loves to chew on the soft toys and throw them around. Sydney has picked up a couple of plastic things on the floor and started chewing on them, so that is something her adoptive parents need to keep an eye on. Her Foster Mom will be getting her some chewie things to keep her occupied, otherwise she really isn't much of a chewer and is not destructive - it is more when opportunity strikes.

Now that Sydney feels a whole lot better, she has much more energy. She really enjoys a walk in the morning and evening. Currently, she is walked in the morning, and is going to the dog park in the afternoon with her foster brothers and really enjoys playing there. When there aren't too many dogs on the 'big dog side', she goes over there and loves to play with the big dogs! She chases after them, but can never catch them with her little legs. Sydney has no fear of other dogs, big or small, and it's a good idea to watch her carefully because she can get right in the middle of playing. It's great fun for her though, and it does wear her out - a tired dog is a happy dog! .

Sydney seems to get along with all dogs she meets - large and small, male and female - it doesn't matter to her. She does however, have a bit of barrier/leash aggression. This is common in dogs - she gets agitated if there is a fence between her and another dog, or if she is on a leash. Basically she just barks a lot and acts like a tough gal. However, once the leash is off or the barrier comes down, she immediately quiets down and either completely ignores the dog, or sniffs and tries to initiate play - it's quite an amazing transformation. Sydney gets along great with the cats, but she can be bossy with them and with the older submissive dog that is in the home. If she is on the couch, she will give a growl to the cats when they jump up, but a quick correction quiets her down and that is as far as it goes.

Because of Sydney's energy level and her alpha personality, her perfect home would be an active one with another dog close to her size and age to play with. Sydney is as sweet as she looks, but like many small dogs, she can be a bit of a snob - she needs to get to know a person before she gives them her 'stamp of approval', but once she knows you, she absolutely loves you. She will be going back to the orthopedic surgeon after 11/14 for (hopefully) her final check-up; and will be going in next week for a hair cut, so check back to see the new 'do' on Sydney and read about what happened at her visit with the surgeon - Foster Mom thinks he is going to say Sydney is ready for her forever home!

UPDATED BIO 10/19/09: Sydney is a 3 y/o 8# yorkie princess, who is being fostered in West Palm Beach, FL. Poor little Sydney was at a South Florida shelter for over a week with a torn ligament on her right rear leg, and a fractured pelvis AND dislocted leg on her left side; when she came into UYR, she had corrective surgery. Sydney was also recently spayed and is recovering very well. She will be getting her stitches out next week and then hopefully that will be the last of her surgeries! Sydney still needs to go back to the orthopedic vet in November for her final (hopefully!) check-up. She is walking fairly well and using her leg, but she still falls frequently - although that certainly doesn't stop her from getting right back up. She walks much better on carpet , although Foster Mom has wood floors in her home. She can go down a couple of stairs, and will go up a small stair, but still cannot jump up on her rear legs. She does favor her rear left leg sometimes as well – at this time, it cannot be determined whether she will have a full and complete recovery from her previous trauma and subsequent surgery, or whether she will always have a limp.

Sydney has been going on walks and short excursions to the dog park and she loves it! Foster Mom has been trying to keep her outings fairly low-key and she has been accommodating, but it's clear she loves to run and play outside. She is completely socialized and a great little dog and loving with people, but she is initially wary when she first meets someone -- she doesn't automatically assume everyone is her best friend. She is also great with other animals, both cats and dogs. So far, she hasn't had any problems with any dogs she's met, but she hasn't met a huge amount of dogs. She has met several dogs at the dog park, and pretty much ignores them, but she sure does like to bark at the big dogs through the fence; although so far she hasn’t actually met any of them nose-to-nose, so its uncertain how she will do with big dogs – FM thinks she will do fine. She is fine with the cats and dogs in her house - but she does have a little bit of territory possessiveness. She will sometimes growl & snap at the other animals if they come too close to where she is sleeping, but she gets corrected immediately and if she is on the couch, she is put down. Once she is corrected, she generally stops. It's not something FM considers a problem at this time, but it is something to be aware of when considering her for adoption.

Sydney really is not a yapper, but she does have an extremely loud bark! She is also crate-trained and is crated at night when she sleeps. She does come up on the bed sometimes, and loves to lounge with the other dogs, but since she is not supposed to jump, FM prefers she not sleep on the bed at night. She is almost housetrained - but she needs to be taken out on a regular basis; otherwise she may potty in the house. It’s unsure at this time when Sydney will be ready for adoption; but should find out after her visit to the surgeon in November. She will be going to the groomer after her stitches get removed, so check back for new, updated pictures of her!

UPDATED BIO 09/20/09: Sydney is a 3 y/o 8# yorkie princess, who is being fostered in West Palm Beach, FL. Sydney had an FHO a week ago, and is doing very well. She is showing improving every day; she even wanted to go out with the 'boys' today when Foster Mom brought their leashes out, but it's too soon for her to start walking yet. Sydney has a funny side ~~ she will growl ferociously at the cats, while at the same time crying in pain over her leg, and then begin her growling again. She was even growling at herself while she was desperately trying to get to her stitches today. She is a very sweet little dog, very people-oriented and will make someone a great little companion very soon. She is so cute when she sleeps on her back - and she looks like a little stuffed animal!

UPDATED BIO 9/15/2009: Sydney is a 3 year old 8 lb Yorkie princess. Despite finding herself at the wrong place at the wrong time and getting hit by a car, Sydney found herself at the right place and time when she was brought into UYR's care late last week. After spending 7 days at an area shelter with only the basic medical care, Sydney was rushed to an orthopedic specialist and was determined to have a shattered pelvis, dislocated left femur, and torn ligament on the right rear leg. She underwent an extensive surgery yesterday and is currently in ICU care. Sydney's recovery is going to take months, and we pray she is going to be able to walk again free from any discomfort. Please keep Sydney and her foster family in your thoughts! We will update you soon.

UPDATED BIO 9/11/2009: Hi y'all! It's me, Sydney! I am 3 years old and 8.2 lbs. I went to the Dogtor today, and I got the news my foster momma expected. I have a broken pelvis and a dislocated femur. I may need something called an FHO. I don't know what that is, but if it makes me walk normally again, I think it's a good thing. I am going to see the bone specialist in the morning. Do you think he'll have a nice one for me to chew on??? Wish me luck! I'm hoping they can put me back together again by early next week. My pelvis was broken for 8 days before UYR was allowed to bust me outta that shelter! I'm ready already! FM says I'm really gonna have to ham it up if I want people to send me a little bit of money to help pay for my reeeally big vet bills. I figure if everybody that cares about me sends me $5, I will be ok. Oh yeah, I had all my shots today, and my bloodwork was perfect.... just like me! This is Sydney signing off!

ORIGINAL BIO 9/10/2009: Sydney is a 3 year old 8.2 lb beautiful little girlie who was hit by a car and left for dead on the side of the road. A good samaritan found Sydney who brought her to the shelter where she waited in pain with a broken leg for her mom and dad to come find her and make her better. Needless to say nobody came. UYR pulled this little one from the shelter this evening. We will be bringing Sydney to the rescue vet ASAP tomorrow so that she may receive pain medication and have Xrays of her leg to assess the damage. Sydney can get around, but currently drags her left rear leg. It's so sad, but this one has a fighting spirit! Sydney is also SUCH a sweet little girl. She has such a wonderful personality and so deserves a chance at a happy life and home.
