Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Being fostered in Maine. If there was a canine IQ test, Baxter would be off the scale. This little man is smart and two of his greatest life pleasures are to learn and love. Just thinking about him puts a smile on his foster Mom’s face because of his silliness, bounciness and high-activity level – all thanks to his Boston heritage. But on the other hand, he has the stubborn streak typical of the Frenchie. Bottom line – the combination makes for a fellow who is happy to play, go for a walk, and snuggle with his humans.
Baxter is also just loaded with a vibrant and robust personality. Once he gets to know you, he is outgoing, friendly, and loves to perform. In short, he is just plain FUN!
Baxter went into rescue because he has some behavioral needs that can be managed. In this case, someone ignoring explicit instructions on how to behave around him resulted in the biting of a stranger. In other words, Baxter needs to have time to adjust to new people and situations and he will be a great companion! He gets along with other dogs, but he will try to push the limit to be dominant. When he crosses the threshold and gets told to back down, he will.
With an understanding of this behavioral issue, Baxter will do great in a home with a single person, younger couple, people with short-nosed dog experience, and a home without children. His adjustment in his new home should be slow and easy, without a lot of demands placed on him. Be aware that he’s prone to nervousness and reaction around strangers, but once he’s trusts, he’s happy. Slow and steady wins with Baxter.
A rural or suburban environment with a single family house would work for him. Baxter is content with going for walks and would need a fenced-in back yard. A neighborhood with little fingers poking through fences is not a good thing. Also, he is definitely not a dog-park candidate.
His health is good. He had a benign lump removed from his left stifle. One vet said he has a 2/6 heart murmur and another said there is no heart murmur at all, so something to follow up on.
It’s our experience that foster Moms always have the best insight into their charges, and so Baxter’s foster Mom says:
“He is so dang cute! Very expressive eyes and a very loving personality – once he’s adjusted and trusting. He loves to train and to please his person.”
