Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle.
We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process. Introducing Alaska! He is a Husky/Keeshond mix, approximately 2 years old, but don’t let his floof fool you, he is only 52 pounds and nice sized boy. True to his Keeshond breed he is smart, loving, and a true companion dog. His Husky side comes out when he is being playful with other dogs, and his prey drive activates when squirrels are present.
Alaska is a recent transplant from Northern Manitoba where he pretty much had to fend for himself. Despite a rough start to life he is the most loving loyal pup you could ask for. He is food motivated but not aggressive, and sits and waits patiently to be fed every day. Alaska has a beautiful coat and while he does shed, it’s not as much as you might think! Brushing him once or twice a week and going to the groomers a few times a year will keep his coat in top shape.
Alaska is calm and quiet indoors, happy to gnaw on a bone while you work or play a game of zoomies with one of his toys. He would do best in a house where he can receive a ton of attention and pets. As a medium energy dog, he needs a good, run, walk, or play at least twice a day in order for him to be happy to chill by your side. Because he is a bit of a velcro dog, he isn’t happy spending a ton of time alone in the backyard and prefers to be close to his humans. Alaska has not had any accidents in the house, and has amazing bladder control through the night. Alaska has been on a schedule of getting 3 good walks a day with additional backyard play sessions, which means he hasn’t learned to ask to go outside as we just take him out often, and would thrive in a similarly structured environment.
Alaska accepts the crate at nighttime and for a few hours during the day, but he would much prefer to be around his people and will sometimes sing a Husky song to let you know he isn’t happy about being in there. Again Alaska would do best in a home where people are home a majority of the time. Alaska is a smart boy and is working on basic commands such as sit, stay and heel, he is also learning to walk nicely on leash, but still gets excited when he smells or sees something exciting. Alaska has come along way in a few weeks, but would benefit from additional training.
Alaska has had limited interactions with dogs so far, (thanks Covid) but has been friendly with a few female dogs in the neighborhood. He vocalizes and tries to get close to dogs when out on walks, but more in interest rather than aggression. We would consider a home for Alaska with a good natured female dog, but he would also do well being the only dog and getting all of the attention. Alaska loves everyone he meets, and wants to be their best friend. While is he a gentle soul, his over the top need to love can be a bit much for the younger crowd. Alaska would do best in a house with kids 10 and above. One of his ways of showing affection is to be “mouthy” with hands or feet, as well as to jump up and even playfully take out your legs. This is another reason why he will be best in a home with older kids. While he hasn’t officially met a cat yet, it should be assumed that Alaska is not a cat friendly dog due to his high prey drive, so no cats or other small animals in his forever home please!
Alaska would love to be in a home where he could receive a ton of attention and affection throughout the day, he is great in the car and enjoys going on adventures with his humans. He has learned that he is not allowed on his foster parents couch, but his dream home would have a special spot just for him to keep an eye on his people. Alaska is a loving dog looking for his forever family, could this be you ?
