My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Lucy is a gorgeous one-year old spayed Catahoula weighing in at 45lbs. UTD on vaccines and preventatives. She is looking for someone who would like to take her home to foster or foster-to-adopt. She came to rescue after she was accidentally injured while playing with in the yard with some bigger dogs. This injury left her paralyzed below her waist. She does not have use of her hind legs and requires help with toileting. More details on the medical stuff later. Let’s talk about what a good girl she is!

Despite what she’s been through, it has not broken her spirit. Lucy is exceptionally affectionate. She loves to be petted and snuggled and to lay in your lap. She would love to be the center of someone’s attention. She loves to play with toys and of course loves treats. Her current favorite is her Kong filled with frozen peanut butter or yogurt. Lucy loves every person she meets – big and small. As a matter of fact, she strongly prefers human company. She’s a little TOO interested in kitties, but they don’t share her enthusiasm. Lucy would do best as an only dog. She gets jealous when she has to share the love.

Lucy can get around inside the house quite well on smooth floors and soft rugs without much assistance. She would do better in a spacious home where there aren’t too many obstacles for her. For obvious reasons she can’t do stairs on her own, but she does have a special lead designed to help you lift her up and down and when in her lead she does a great job with a few stairs at a time. Lucy has a wheelchair that she is fond of. She loves to go for short walks in her wheels and sniff around the yard.

Lucy has some urinary and fecal continence, but she does not “go potty” like an able-bodied dog. She holds her bladder when she’s in bed overnight. When it’s time for her to get up we lift her over a pee pad, and she does her business. We repeat this throughout the day and express her a few times to make sure she’s empty (this helps prevent bladder infections). #2 is a little less predictable but she does go on a regular schedule as she is fed on a regular schedule. High quality food (she is currently on Fresh Pet and Pure Balance dry) makes her stool easy to manage and prevents her from soiling herself too badly if she has an accident in her crate. She is used to wearing a washable diaper with a disposable pad inside when she’s roaming around during the day in case of urinary leaks. She has a really cute wardrobe!

Since November of last year, Lucy has been traveling twice a week to see her special vet in Spartanburg, SC for laser therapy. It would be great if she could continue seeing this vet, but we can work with a local foster/adopter to locate a closer place for her to receive her therapy. Her current vet will be happy to consult. We do not currently know how much longer she will need therapy. She has shown some improvement, flexing and bending her legs recently. This is vitally important to maximize her quality of life.

Lucy will come with all her daily care supplies including her special harness and her wheelchair. Her current foster is happy to provide advice and assistance as needed – 24/7.
