My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Skylar
Nickname: Sky
What we think she is: Shepherd/Bully/Cattle Dog Mix
What the DNA test says: American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog, White Swiss Shepherd Mix
Weight: 65 lbs.
Sex: Female
Age: 1 year and 4 months
Before OMD: Came into the shelter as a puppy after some sort of trauma that resulted in an injured hind leg / hip. We are total suckers for speckled dogs so we were a yes the minute animal control reached out to us.
Early Medical: Skylar required FHO surgery. She did some resting and rehab in her foster home and her leg is good as new.
Current Medical: Clean bill of health and she has a bad a** scar that’s pretty awesome.
Energy Level: Extreme. Think "ready to hike 5 miles a day, every day" extreme. A fenced in backyard would also do the trick!
Favorite Features: Her very expressive ears and the way she uses them to communicate. Her eyes. No description necessary. Her speckles.
Yearbook Superlative: Best smile.
Descriptors: Athletic. Affectionate. Playful. Silly. Willful. Mischievous.
What she loves most: Water. Streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, kiddie pools, you name it. Snow is a close second. Also: hiking, playful dog friends, toys, zoomies, cuddles, relaxing on the kitchen table.
Guilty pleasure: Sock hoarding.
What makes us laugh: Her sleeping style has been described by her foster mom as a starfish on cocaine -- legs everywhere and always moving.
The good news: She can be "contained" with pillows and is a great snuggler once immobilized.
What we love most: She is always raring to go. She loves a good Bark Box and helps open it every time. She is the perfect medium size. She was willing to try kayaking (ultimately not a fan).
Not our favorite: Ya girl has a smart mouth. She’s a backtalk extraordinaire. She throws toddler-like “fall to the floor and make a scene" tantrums when she’s not ready for the party to be over.
Her perfect day: A car ride to an all-day hiking location with plenty of water along the way, followed by a much deserved post-hike pup cup or ice cream, and finally, a snooze with lots of pillows (#immbolizethestarfish)
Motivators: Food? Not particularly, but a good chew toy? Now you’re talking.
Smart Cookie Level: It's complicated. She's smart but she likes to pretend she can't hear. We thought she was deaf when she first came into rescue. She's not.
What she knows: Sit (on her terms), back away from the door and shockingly, she's a rock star at staying close during off leash hikes.
Working on: Learning where her feet and mouth don’t belong, down, paw, and wait.
The good news: She absolutely wants to please her humans so with patience and persistence, we think she can master any / all commands and tricks.
Gotta be honest: Her leash manners aren't great. She goes from etiquette valedictorian to the hulk when she sees a human or another dog.
Dogs: Absolute must. Sky needs to go to a home with another young, playful pup. She’s never met another dog she hasn’t liked.
Cats: No experience, but we’re guessing she would be okay with a very very dog-savvy cat.
Donkeys & Horses: Thumbs up.
Kids: Older only please. She doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, but also doesn’t have a ton of coordination or fine tuned manners. She's also been known to be a little mouthy, so we don’t want any dog/small kiddo collisions with her body or her teefers.
What's on her vision board: A home (no shared walls) with a fenced in backyard and a water source (kiddie pools qualify). An active, athletic, adventurous, always on-the-go family who wants her to tag along. A young, playful canine sibling.
Note: It is unlikely that we will consider homes with older dogs. Yes, we know some breeds are high energy even in their senior years but if there is a dog around, Sky will want to play and most older pups want to rest eventually. Skylar does not.
Crate trained: Yes! Wonderful in her crate after some very minor protesting initially.
Housetrained: 200%

Skylar is spayed, vaccinated, heartworm negative and microchipped. She is available for adoption to residents of CT and surrounding states. If you’re interested in adopting, please complete an application from omdrescue.org.
