Hugo and his 4 siblings (Umi, Lola, Goofy, & Ada) and other pups were found in an undeveloped area to fend for themselves. Hugo and his little mates were estimated to be about 6 months when they were rescued. At first he was very nervous and afraid of strangers. Then, with the loving and nurturing care of his rescuer and foster family, he came out of his shell in a short few days and is now enjoying being petted by people.
Hugo is an affectionate, friendly, playful, active and energetic boy. He is reserve and cautious at first and would need time and space to get to know you. It is important that you are confident and assertive. Once he gains your trust, he is the best possible dog you could imagine – loyal, happy and obedient. Before trusting, he would growl out of fear. Hugo will need time to settle into a new environment, so it is best to take it slow with him and ‘let him come to you.’ After a few days, with treats/food, and being calm and ‘disinterested’ in him, he will trust you. Having an assertive, confident and strong leader is important for Hugo to feel secure. However, he is very food motivated, and warms up soon after you give him treats. If you allow him to come to you with treats on hand, he will warm up quickly as he is quite adaptive to the new environment with some patience and love.
