My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We can only wonder what kind of life Nicky lived before he came to us. What we know is that a woman that was living in a motel/hotel room died. No one knew who she was. Later a cleaning lady was cleaning the room and as she went to clean under the bed she found this poor frightened dog. She then brought him to the animal shelter as they didn't know what else to do. He had to stay in the shelter for 6 days to see if a relative would come and claim him, but no one did.
We pulled him on his due out day and two days later he tested positive for Parvo. He then spent time at the veterinarian's office being treated. The vet gave him a 50/50 chance of surviving. The poor frightened dog was very passive when we got him, probably because he was sick. As he got better at the vet he became a bit upset with all the needles and treatments that were necessary, which was a good sign.
When he was released to his foster home he was fearful but not aggressive as he remembered that she was the one that picked him up from the Shelter and had visited him at the Shelter before his release. We have seen time and time again, that the person who takes a dog from the shelter is never really forgotten by that dog.
He will be going to his new foster home soon, who gave him his name, Nicky. He is still a frightened little boy but everyday he gains more courage and now has made up with others in the foster home. He is what we call a "shadow dog", a dog that will follow you from behind but when you turn to pick him up or talk to him he quickly retreats to a safe distance from you. Wanting to be with you but afraid to be with you. We will never know why he became a "shadow dog", but we know that everyday he is learning to trust people and is on his way to a much better life.
He is not house trained at this time. He is a chihuahua who weighs about 10 lbs and is about 8 months old. He is now neutered and vaccinated and in his foster home he will learn to interact with other dogs, cats and people. Nicky is not ready to be adopted at this time as he needs to work through his past and into his future. We will soon have updates about his journey to his new life, we know that soon his worried, frightened look will turn into a happy and confident one.
