Here's what the humans have to say about me:
12/15/09:
Ginger has been residing in her new foster home for a week or so and adjusting quickly. She is living with two other dogs and a cat. She was recently diagnosed with an infection in both ears which is being treated. Ginger weighs in at 52lbs.
Below is an update from her foster mom:
“Ginger is a remarkable dog. On Friday everyone behaved like she has lived here her whole life. Ginger has also conquered the doggie door.....she now knows she can go through it to get in and out.
Friday I went out to dinner with my youngest son and we were away for about 90 minutes......I did not put Ginger in the crate as I wanted to see how she acted without me in sight or at the house.......she did just fine....no destructive behavior at all. She has continued to act the same way each successive day
that I've gone out.
She does not like medication placed in her ears or to get them cleaned. She knows what the medicine bottle looks/smells like and she knows what q-tips are.......she is really smart. I'm still winning though....the medicine gets in.”
11/23/09: HEALTHY Body.....WEALTHY Spirit.....WISE Mind
Ginger received a complete health assessment last month which she passed with flying colors! We were so relieved when the veterinarian gave us such a good report. The doctor also said that her extended nipples were merely a reaction to the hormones produced by the ovarian tumor. Since the tumor was completely removed her nipples have receded somewhat; the nipples will remain enlarged, but they are merely cosmetic.
Ginger has put on weight and is one wiggling mass of happy boxer muscle! She looks great and has the energy of a 2 year old puppy. She loves to use the fenced yard as her "drag strip" while she runs huge circles. With little effort, we have taught her to return the Frisbee quite well when playing fetch and she also enjoys a good game of "you can't catch me". Inside the house she is very laid back and loves to snooze.
Although we thought we had finally found the elusive "Perfect Boxer", we have uncovered one minor "flaw" :) She will counter surf went left alone in the house, but never when we are home. I guess she just can't help herself when there are no people around who she can shower with affection.
10/1/09: GINGER WAS DUMPED IN A SHELTER BY HER FAMILY AND LEFT TO DIE
FOSTER HOME NEEDED!
Ginger is a darling 7 year old female boxer. We were contacted by a very wealthy shelter that did not want to make Ginger available for adoption to the general public due to "possible" health issues. NBR scrambled to make room for her as the shelter was planning on killing her.
Ginger was very ill when she was brought to the shelter by her family of 7 years. We learned she had been sick for several months with a uterine infection and was in poor condition. When the shelter doctor spayed her they found a tumor on her ovary which was completely removed.
Our volunteer, who visited the shelter, was surprised to meet a severely skinny wiggle-butt with a fantastic attitude! Currently she weighs in at 42 pounds and her vet history shows that she weighed 54 pounds in May. She has a very good appetite so we are hopeful that she will start packing on the pounds now that she is out of the shelter and feeling better.
Once we took Ginger into rescue we discovered that Ginger had other medical concerns that were not mentioned. She has a scar on her leg that appeared to have been a bad surgery repair from a break but when we tracked down her previous vet records it states that she had a tumor removed from the leg; it appears that the tumor has grown back.
We have made an appointment with the vet to get a complete exam to include extensive blood work. We will also have her cough checked out which we are hoping is only kennel cough. We will also have the vet examine four of her nipples that are grossly distended. We want to make sure that these nipples are only a cosmetic issue and not something more serious. Ginger is such a happy dog we are praying her exam gives us good news.
Ginger has never met a stranger yet that she did not like and she greets all with the famous "boxer kidney bean dance". She is getting along very well with all of the animals (dogs, parrots, pet rodents, etc) in her temporary foster home. Her shelter intake paperwork said that she LOVES kitties and has helped to raise two children who are now 2 and 4 years old.
Ginger was trained to stay off the furniture so she isn’t comfortable getting up herself buts loves to snuggle up close when she is lifted onto the couch or bed. She enjoys sleeping on a dog bed at night in the bedroom being close to the rest of the family.
Ginger is a real sweetheart and a perfect house guest. We have yet to find a single flaw in her personality or behavior!
