Vito is a sweet boy who enjoys the great outdoor. He likes to play with other dogs his size and gets along with cats. Vito is playful and would to play chase with cats such as his foster cat siblings. He is house-trained and prefers to do his business outdoor. We are looking for a family for Vito who is an experienced dog owner, preferably had a rescue dog before. Vito needs to be a suburban environment as city life can be very stressful for him – such as the sound of cars and the crowded space. A yard with secured fence so that he would be happy to run around the yard. He would thrive with a loving but a smaller family (he is fine with kids as his foster has a small boy) that are have daily routines as he takes time to warm up to strangers. If you are interested in Vito, please take the time to read his rescue story below and it will make sense to you regarding his personality.
Vito and his litter mates were abandoned when they were less than a week old in an isolated area in the mountains in Taiwan, even before they opened their eyes. Without their mother to nourish them, the puppies were quite weak when they were first rescued. With the loving care from his rescuers, Vito developed into a healthy little boy. His blood work was normal and with no health issues.
Sadly, on one of the daily trips to a local park, Vito was attacked by a man with a box cutter. This man was known in the area to have mental illness and was trying to cut people with the box cutter. Vito was playing at the time and started barking at this man when sensing the danger. His barks startled the man and the man fell to the ground, and attacked Vito by cutting his right front paw. Vito ran right back to his rescuer who took him immediately to a vet. Poor Vito had 10 stitches from this incident, and wad traumatized afterwards. He became terrified of strangers, in particular men, and lost his confidence.
The rescuer and their friends began to proactively rehabilitate Vito ever since the incident by slowly exposing him to different social situations. He has made great stride since and is regaining his confidence. However, it does takes some times for him to warm up to others and he is still not a fan of noise or crowd. At times, he would bark at strangers to alert or hide behind his humans – as part of his coping mechanism. If you are patient and let him come to you, you would see his confidence returns and Vito would show you all the love in the world.
