Here's what the humans have to say about me:
In Bloomington
Dexter is a handsome 3 year old male, black tri, Australian Shepherd. He is 57lbs of lean muscle. Dexter is a very sweet boy who is super exuberant. He loves to cuddle and snuggle with his human. He absolutely has an off switch and settles nicely. He knows how to sit and is learning to "wait" and "stay." He is also potty trained and crate trained. He is very treat-motivated, learns quickly, and will get in his kennel if given a treat or a bowl of food. He does guard his food from other dogs, so being fed in a secluded space, such as his kennel is best.
Dexter would do best with a calm and strong leader as his forever human. Dexter has a bit of anxiety, so a calm and quiet home would be the best environment for him to relax and feel comfortable in. Dexter cannot have a forever human that has anxiety themselves or any kind of depression, as his anxiety will worsen with that. Dexter’s anxiety is slight; and it manifests itself in pacing. He is most comforted by his human when they snuggle him.
He plays well with his four legged foster brother, but he does need to be watched in case he gets overstimulated. He does okay with other dogs; but it takes him a while to warm up to them. He will share toys with his four legged foster brother, but we are working on sharing bones and being more patient when getting treats next to another dog. Dexter does not do well with cats; he will chase them until he catches them with the intent to hurt them, so a home without cats is a MUST.
Dexter LOVES to run and play outside so a home with a nice, large fenced-in yard is needed for Dexter to live his best life. He will kennel up if needed, but does get quite anxious when being left alone for long periods of time. He would love someone to be home a lot of work from home.
He loves snuggling with his person and will quite literally burrow his head into them for belly rubs. If allowed, he will sleep right by your side; he is the perfect protector!
Dexter’s forever family should only use positive reinforcement when doing any training with Dexter. He does not respond well to punishment or any negative reinforcement; that amps up his anxiety. He needs someone that is going to show him just how loving humans can be while teaching him the rules of the house. Dexter would be his best self in a home with older children that are 12 and up. Dexter is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped and takes monthly prevention year round.
Dexter’s MUST haves:
No cats/chickens
A strong leader with no anxiety or depression type issues
Positive reinforcement
Calm and quiet home
Someone that works from home or is home a lot (not just during Covid)
Dexter’s wants:
Physically Fenced yard
To be the only dog and get all the attention from his human
Human with Aussie experience
