Habibi (meaning ‘My Love’ in Arabic) is a victim of selfish and uncaring human whose neglect resulted in the dog loosing one of his hind legs.
He flew in all the way from Egypt to find a compassionate, loving and knowledgeable home and is currently in a foster home in Peterborough area. .
Although clumsy at times, that is not slowing him down and he, like other Malis loves to be active and challenged. Everything is a game to him and if you have a Kong Wubba, he can play ‘fetch’ for hours.
Habibi is a very affectionate boy: he adores a good head rub and nothing makes him happier than being praised and knowing he has done a good job.
The very first thing in the morning and last thing at night that he does is flip on his back and ask for belly rubs. An amazing, loving dog showing his trust and affection who would not hesitate to put his own life in jeopardy to save his handler’s.
He is very attentive and when interacting with his handler, you can see his forehead wrinkle and stare intently, which is a sign that he’s focusing and trying to figure out what’s expected of him. Truly a pleasure to be with.
Due to lack of proper socializing when younger, he is skittish with strangers. But he makes great progress every day.
He is also not a good candidate to live with cats as they simply drive him nuts: although never aggressive and ok when they lie down and are just there, as soon as they move, he simply can not help himself and start chasing.
Habibi has a lot learn: obedience, following rules and understanding boundaries but being with his foster family for roughly 3 weeks, he has made remarkable progress. He knows ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘leave it’. Yes, it’s not a lot comparing him to other ambassadors of his breed who’ve had happy, safe and loving puppyhoods with humans teaching and reinforcing the rules. But please remember that Habibi not only works on learning obedience, but also has to learn how to live in a home and be a ‘team player’, follow the rules, take a break and just be. Lots to learn, and he's doing very well.
We are looking for an experienced and active family for Habibi. One that will want to truly rescue a Mali and help a dog in need. A special family indeed, as we have been told that him having only three legs, and being under-socialized and not trained in obedience at his age makes him ‘useless’.
We see it differently.
The work the family will have to put into helping Habibi will be significant but the love, loyalty and unbreakable bond they end up sharing with him will be unlike any other. He wants his own family, his own humans to love and respect.
If you are looking for a cool goof ball who sees life as the funnest adventure please get in touch with us.
