Here's what the humans have to say about me:
We rescued our Reggie from a high kill Long Island shelter several months ago. He was just a puppy of about nine months old and had spent the majority of his youth living on a slab of concrete without a family of his own.
The shelter got crowded and things got dangerous for Reggie. We pulled him out in July and boarded him with our petsitter, and now he is living in a foster home with three other dogs and a cat.
At first shy and insecure, Reggie has blossomed into a social little lover boy – lavishing all the other dogs in the house with tons of kisses (he has an ear fetish o:). He pays no attention to the cat. This youngster (now about a year old) is one of the best tempered little guys we have ever had the pleasure of rescuing and was doing so well until a few months ago . . . Reggie began exhibiting a problem with one of his eyes. We rushed him to our vet, and the prognosis was difficult to accept. Reggie has Secondary Glaucoma and needed to have his eye removed.
Everyone in our group was devastated as we all know that Reggie’s life has been one of hardship. When we first pulled him from the shelter our vet noticed bite scars on his little head and told us he had been attacked. However due to his kind nature, Reggie would never fight back. He probably just took the beating (tiny puppy that he was) without resisting. After all, he had to be very little at that point – there probably wasn’t much he could do to stop it. Our vet reports that an old trauma probably caused this condition. Reggie has been through quite a bit for such a young little boy.
At the shelter, Reggie longed for his special person to show up and realize what a joy he is. Always a smile on his face, he waited and waited. But no one showed up for him. Even after we rescued him, Reggie had his share of disappointments – many people showed an initial interest in him, but none had the soul and depth required to see how really extraordinary he is. We all figured Reggie was meant for something much better.
Now our sweet little angel is a special needs boy. His eye has been amputated. His other eye has also shown weakness and needs to be checked every three months in order to avoid additional problems. Despite all he’s been through, our Darling Reggie still has the cheeriest disposition. Right after surgery, he awoke to find one of our Buddy members by his side. He reached up and gave her a kiss on the nose. Our Reggie will be ok. But we are searching for a very special guardian for him. And, we will be extremely careful on his behalf. Loving, gentle humans only need apply o:)
