My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

1/10: It seems my write-ups about Berks may have created the wrong impression about this wonderful boy, which is that he is shy. He is not shy. Berks happily greets strangers and readily accepts their pets. And he has always approached his foster family, particularly when food was being offered. His issue had been that he was unsure of being approached by people. But he has pretty much learned that being approached is okay and leads to pets. Sometimes he still will go off in another direction, but it seems to be because at that moment he simply has better things to do (like play).

Berks is really a sweetheart and a easy dog. We have had a couple of puppy fosters in the last few weeks. He was very good at playing with them – gentle and tolerant. He plays well with the other dogs. Berks loves a good chew on a Nylabone or a game of tug-o-war. He isn’t destructive, is housetrained, and not food aggressive (though he is food-very-interested).

11/28 - Berkeley’s confidence is increasing daily and he is giving us glimpses into the wonderful dog he will be when he finally realizes he is safe and loved. If we are offering cookies, he will run up to us excitedly and join in the festivities. He will easily accept pets while his mind is occupied by the cookie hunt. We can also give him pets and belly rubs if we catch him while he is napping. He seems to love the attention at these times. But if we try to approach him while he is just wandering around, he will avoid us. So we are just letting him learn he can trust us at his own pace.

One of his favorite activities is playing with the other dogs. He and our beagle Finn or foster Rocky love to play chase, tug-a-war, and play bite. Either one is likely to initiate play at a moments notice. Berk’s other favorite activity is sitting at the back fence looking for

He is an easy boy who just needs someone who will give him lots of love and a little time to learn to trust.

10/18 – Berkeley was a bit uncertain when he came to his foster home last week. He loved being out in the yard and playing with the other dogs, but would cower if we talked to or approached him. While he is still a bit nervous, he is much more comfortable with the goings on in the house.

He loves to play with the other dogs, participating in the many chases and wrestling matches that go on. Berkeley loves to cuddle for naps with the other dogs but is still discovering the benefits of snuggling with people. But he does like to get affection, especially those important belly rubs.

Berkeley isn’t food aggressive and knows that the other dogs’ dinners are not his. He has a beagle bark that he uses discriminately. He doesn’t bark when “hunting” but does sometimes during play. He is also the one who lets us know he and foster brother Kaine are ready to leave the basement in the morning – but this only happens after people and dogs have started to stir upstairs. Berkeley hasn’t been destructive and sticks with approved doggy toys.

Berkeley is about 25 pounds – he is fairly small but sturdily built.

Berkeley is the newest recruit to the BREW CREW. He's about 5 years old and came to us from the Caroline County, MD shelter. He is a short, sturdy (24 pounds) boy who. we are told, loves people, dogs and cats. The shelter reported that he was housed with another beagle and they got along really well. He rode quietly (sleeping mostly) for 2 1/2 hours on the way to the vet and left his crate clean and dry. He peed on command on leash, but he also marked every wall in the waiting room, so his house training will have to be discovered
