My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

ORIGINAL BIO 09/25/2009: Andy is a 2.5 year old 10 lb. skinny little boy who was rescued today from an area high-kill shelter. He will likely be 12-13 lbs once he gets some good food in him. Here's Andy's sad story......

Imagine you are a 10 lb Yorkie. You are very small compared to the rest of the world (and most other dogs). Somehow you get loose. You either ran away, your owner left the gate open and you wandered off, or maybe your owners couldn't afford you anymore and instead of finding a new home for you just let you go. You spend a few nights on your own, living on garbage or maybe a kind person who feels sorry for you feeds you. By this point you're dirty, covered in sticky burrs, excrement, and ticks. Your hair is so long and matted from never receiving proper grooming that you can't even see through your eyes. The world is not a happy place for you, not to mention it's very hot in Florida.

Then someone picks you up and brings you to the pound, and your new home is a small metal cage. Though now you receive 2 square meals, you only have 5 days to get adopted before the shelter workers need to "make room" for the other strays that keep coming in. Nobody walks you. Nobody cuddles you. Nobody loves you. Then, someone walks up to your cage to give you your shots and you have no idea if this giant human is going to hurt you so you bark, growl, and bear your teeth. You want to look like the biggest 10 lbs you possibly can so that nobody hurts you. You're scared. Well, there just went your shot at adoption. Now you are considered a "fearful" dog, and you will never be shown on the adoption floor. You will remain in the "back" where only rescue groups and people looking for their lost pets are allowed to go. You are now covered in urine and feces because you have no choice but to potty in your cage. It's a hopeless situation... and it's very loud with all the barking going on. You can certainly sense something is wrong.

Well, one day Andy's future changed for the better. There was going to be a happy ending for little Andy, as this was truly his story. He was a "fearful" dog. One of our UYR foster moms went to see him, had his cage opened so that she could evaluate him, and gave him a few liver treats. Andy instantly relaxed and knew this person was there to help him. To make a long story short, Andy came home today and showed his FM that he is not remotely "fearful" anymore.

When Andy got home, FM had to IMMEDIATELY get him in the tub. He had feces all over his body, including his muzzle. Andy's FM knew that if she had to have his shaved to remove the matting that it would take a long time for Andy to get adopted...people don't usually want to adopt bald yorkies. Our foster homes are precious, and we need our dogs to be adopted so that we can have room to rescue the next "Andy". So, foster mom sat and combed ever single mat out of his little body. It took 2 hours of bathing and combing to get Andy clean enough to be allowed to roam the house freely. This was undoubtedly uncomfortable for Andy, but he sat through it like a champ. He never growled or snapped. He almost knew FM was trying to help him.

Well, we don't know much else about Andy yet except that he likes other dogs and is a sweetheart. He is only awaiting a dental which will happen in the next 3 weeks. He will then be ready for his FURever home where the REAL happy ending begins for him. Do you want to be Andy's happily ever after?
