My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi, my name is Turk. My foster mom and dad call me “Mr. Turk” because I am a little old guy with a big personality. I can’t see really good and have diabetes so I do require a little extra care which may scare my forever family away but my foster mom says it’s really easy!

Daily Routine:

-Wake up between 7-8AM, go potty, and have breakfast. I get 1/2 cup of dog food in a slow feeder bowl because I eat REALLY fast and sometimes can’t keep it down when using a regular bowl. While I am eating my foster mom prepares my insulin shot with 4 units of insulin. She shakes the bottle, draws it in a syringe, and dispenses to me. She doesn’t want me to get a lump from getting a shot in the same spot every day so she rotates in 3 areas: between my shoulder blades, right hip, left hip and then starts all over for the next 3 days. I am such a tough guy I don’t even flinch or realize she’s coming at me with a needle! All you do is pull up a little skin, poke the needle under, and push the insulin in. My foster mom is very particular and makes sure I get my shot and breakfast in the same 1 hour window every single day. This helps my sugar to stay regulated right where it needs to be. I also get special eyes drops after breakfast. One drop in each eye to help with my dry eyes. I like to go potty again after breakfast.

-During the day my foster mom works from home, which I love! I really hope someone that adopts me is at home most of the day. I like to walk around, drink water, nap, and go outside to potty. Before insulin I could barely hold my bladder. Now I can wait sometimes 6 hours without having to go to the bathroom. To be extra cautious I wear a belly band when I am in the house but rarely ever have accidents anymore. As long as you take me out to use the bathroom a couple times during the day then I am good! If my foster mom has to run an errand throughout the day she will put me in my crate or take me with her. Me and one of my foster siblings have car seats and love to ride!

-I like my dinner between 5-6PM. I get another 1/2 cup of food in my slow feeder bowl. Once I am done eating I get my 2nd dose of eye drops in each eye for the end of the day. It’s really easy and I don’t mind them at all. After dinner I like to go outside and take care of my potty business!

-My bedtime varies since I snooze throughout the day. I normally watch tv with my foster humans and fall asleep in my dog bed next to their bed around 9PM. Right before they go to bed for the night they take me out to potty one last time and put my belly band on just in case. I have not had any accidents throughout the night though since I’ve been on insulin.

Things I like: frequent naps, roaming the yard, walking on a leash, riding in the car, playing with my foster siblings big and small, meal time, snuggling, and when humans scratch my head.

Things I dislike: really no major dislikes

Extra notes: Since I am on insulin once per day I cannot have any treats!!!! I don’t like this very much but I know my foster mom wants the best for me and is just trying to keep my sugar where it needs to be. I may bark when you are in the kitchen cooking but just talk to me, I love to interact in my dog language! I will also bark when I need something like when I am excited for breakfast/dinner or I need to go potty. Other than that I am pretty calm. As she mentioned I don’t see very well so occasionally I walk into the wall. No big deal though I turn and keep going. My vision is worse in the dark and I can’t master going down steps that great so if you don’t mind to pick me up when there are a lot of steps involved so that I don’t go stumbling down them on accident. I can decently get up a couple of steps but to be safe foster mom doesn’t let me go upstairs with her when she’s working. I patiently hang in my bed until she comes back down and I am okay with that!

Turk has KCS (dry eye), so he’ll need eye drops 2x per day for life. He recently had a dental, so his teeth are nice and clean!

Turk is currently in a foster home in Middle Tennessee. If you are interested in adding him to your family, please complete an application at www.goofyfootrescue.org. Transport is available to middle Tennessee, East Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
