My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Pax If Pax doesn't take your heart we're not sure who will. This guy is uber awesome. We rescued Pax from a high-kill shelter, along with his half-siblings Mollie and Ollie, and three other dogs. We put them on their Freedom Ride for Life and they never looked back. He is a gem! Pax is thought to be a four-year old American Bulldog/Pointer mix. He's all muscle at 58 lbs. Pax is adorable with a sleek white coat and a jaunty patch over one ear that gives him impish charm. Pax is always smiling and has a welcoming, friendly demeanor that makes you want to be around him. Pax is a calm and pretty chill dude, but he loves to play. He seems to get along well with other dogs. Pax is described by all who have worked with him as one of the nicest dogs we have ever had. He loves to go off site and go for walks, hikes, and car rides. Pax has demonstrated that he will give chase to cats and should be placed in a home without them. Pax is a smart dog and learns quickly. He loves being with people and enjoys his time out of the kennel. We have fallen in love with Pax. He's just a great, solid and charming young dog. He's going to make for a great companion and will bring a lifetime of fun and love to the lucky person or family who adopts him. Get your application in for this wonderful doggo. Call 706-865-4135 for information on additional health services provided as part of the adoption fee. If interested in one of our puppies or dogs, please submit an application online or at the shelter. Applications can be submitted online at: https://www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/page/dog-adoption-application Once an application is submitted online, you will receive an email saying your application has been successfully submitted. If you don't receive this email within 24 hours, please check to make sure all application fields were completed or please call our shelter at 706-865-4135. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out of state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://smithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals. Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Resident animals are primarily owner relinquished and also accepted from local Animal Control. The facility usually is operating at capacity with a list of animals waiting for space to open. Adoptions and meet and greets are being scheduled by appointment only. Please call our office, email us or complete an application and someone will be in touch just as soon as they can. Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process begins with the submission of an application which is used to gather information and initiate conversation with the adopting person/family. The form also assists us with assessing the environment for suitability and safety in the placement of our residents. The application is the first step in the approval process, followed by veterinarian reference check, landlord approval confirmation if relevant and a home visit which may be done physically or virtually depending on the distance from the shelter. The approval process can be initiated either before or after a visit to the shelter to visit our residents. The application for dogs is located on our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271213192922944/?type=3&theater . For cat application, go to: https://www.facebook.com/smithgallhumanesociety/photos/a.984873858223547.1073741865.548822128495391/1271223856255211/?type=3&theater . The forms will be automated for online submission through a new website currently under construction with an anticipated launch date of no later than Nov 2016. Requirements for adoption are specific to the needs of the animal in addition to standard checks for safety issues. Adopters must come to the shelter once approved to take their adopted pet home. We do not ship nor do we transport. Submitting the form is neither a guarantee of adoption nor an entitlement to "first come, first served" in the selection process of safely and appropriately placing our residents. Decision to approve/not approve an adopter(s) is based on the needs of the dog, not the needs of the adopter. The application should be downloaded before printing. The completed form can be returned through Facebook Messages, emailing to: smithgallhumanesociety@windstream.net or delivery to the shelter. The process usually takes 1 to 3 business days but can be slowed by not completing all of the questions, difficulty in reaching people relevant to approval and scheduling a home visit. Our residents must be returned to us at any point in time if the adoption is no longer suitable/safe for the pet or circumstances have changed to where a new home is needed. A contract must be signed to complete the adoption process. Standard fees for dogs are $100 and for cats $85. Some fees are subsidized in various amounts as low as $25 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for dogs and $20 (minimum allowed subsidized fee) for cats . All of our animals are spay/neutered, have age appropriate vaccines and are free of internal parasites. Dogs are tested for heart worms and put on monthly prevention. Cats are tested for FIV/FeLV.

More about this shelter

Charles Smithgall Humane Society (est 1994) is a small no-kill shelter which utilizes our adoption center, social media and offsite events to seek safe and appropriate homes for our residents. Our mission is to provide safe sanctuary and all standard preventive care procedures and veterinary services to the dogs and cats of our local communities Intakes are primarily owner relinquishments with some animals accepted from animal control when space is available. All potential adopters must be evaluated through our approval process. We are funded 100% by donations and fundraising events. With the exception of 2 kennel managers, our operations are totally managed with volunteers. We are always in need of donations and volunteers. We appreciate the sharing of our pets on social media as most of our adoptions have resulted through the resources of the internet.
