Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Apache is a sweet, playful, affectionate, and outgoing 6 year old neutered male German Shepherd and Northen breed mix. He is strong, smart, tall, and lanky. Apache was relinquished to a California shelter with a Corgi pal after he escaped a 6 foot fence one too many times, and the owner elected to give them up rather than reinforce his fence. In that home, Apache lived alongside children, and he loves them. However, given his size, his tendency to grab tasty food, and his propensity to escape, we will not adopt him to families with children under the age of 14.
Apache is doing well under leash, but we recommend walking him with a prong collar and a harness as he is stong and will pull if excited. Apache is a counter surfer and an adopter will have to work with him on obedience if he is to be left unsupervised in the kitchen. He does not have separation anxiety when left at home with an animal companion, but does if he is left completely alone. Apache came in with a Corgi friend from the shelter, and does well with certain dogs that he is introduced to properly. He also lived with a large dominant cat in a foster home, but this should be approached carefully as always with cats and big dogs. Apache will need someone who is around a lot to give him training, attention, and daily exercise. He does not like to be left alone and can be destructive. He has been crate trained, but likes the crate to be where he can see his people, otherwise he will howl.
Regarding containment, Apache jumped a 6' fence and escaped annually at mating season in his previous home, so 6' fencing with lean is required, or higher fencing. A secure escape-proof enclosure or crating is required for those times when you can't be with him. He will howl if left without a companion of some type. He has been neutered so the urge to wander will be somewhat decreased.
Apache can be hand shy with dominant, agressive voices and we feel he has had some mild abuse or at the least significant scoldings. Apache is good with people in general and warms up to people quickly. He is well behaved in public. A gentle and patient handler would be great for this sweetie. Someone who is around a lot or could bring him to work would be perfect for Apache. He sits nicely all day under an office desk. He really just wants to be with a lovong owner! He will ride in the car wth his head out the window or else he will get car sick. We are extending his car rides daily.
Apache has been in foster since February and in that time has been fully vetted and neutered. Apache did get away from his first adopter in July 4th after just having him a few hours. He was put into a in a strange, stressful situation without restraints of any type, and he ran away. He was hit by a car at that time and has been healing since then, with no apparent significant damage. He is a beautiful boy looking for a home of his own.
