My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET DAKOTA. Dakota is a sweet little female Miniature Schnauzer/Poodle mix who is 9 years old and weighs a chubby 16.7 lbs. She is blind as a result of glaucoma. Dakota is being fostered in Spring Hill, Florida. Due to Covid-19, all Florida foster dogs must be adopted by Florida residents at this time. No exceptions will be made.

INITIAL BIO 07/23/2020: Dakota was picked up as a stray by animal control and was in pretty bad shape. She had bilateral ear infections, was infested with fleas, and was very dirty and matted. It was obvious that she had been neglected for a long time. As if that wasn't enough for this precious little girl, her eyes had mature cataracts and corneal edema, and upon further examination, it was discovered that she had glaucoma in both eyes. Glaucoma causes pain that is more severe in dogs than in humans, so she most likely has been in pain for a long time. She was already non-visual in both eyes, so the decision was made to enucleate both of her eyes to alleviate the pain.

Dakota was likely a beloved companion dog at one time, but she did have a history with the shelter since she had been there previously and when the owner was contacted, they did show up and reclaim her. However, this time when contact was made with the owner several times, she never showed up to pick up this precious little girl. When UYR was called about Dakota, it wasn't hard to make the decision to bring her into our Foster Care Program.

Dakota is a very sweet little girl who over the years has adjusted to having no vision. She gets along with other dogs. We have no history if she gets along with cats. She walks on a leash and responds well to verbal cues. She is quiet, rides well in the car, and is otherwise a healthy little girl. Dakota's perfect home would be one that perhaps has some experience with blind dogs; however, there are many resources available on the internet that can guide owners on how to live with blind dogs. Due to her special needs, we feel a quiet laid-back home would be ideal for her. An adult only home would be preferred, but children 14 years old or older would also be okay.

Please don't look away from Dakota due to her blindness. She has a lot of years to give love and devotion to a forever family. There is so much more to learn about her, so stay tuned to learn more about her and her progress in her foster home.
