My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rita is a 9 year old pit bull mix who is a sweet girl. She lived most of her life out on a chain before she was taken to a high kill shelter where she had 10 days or less to get adopted or rescued. Older pits who have lived on chains are not in high demand .. but we saw her face and could not let her die. So we pulled her and that was in November of 2018.

Rita was of course a little unsure of people and other dogs, so we had to put her in our indoor / outdoor kennel. Over the last 2 years she has blossomed so much. She was a strong heart worm positive when we pulled her, but she has been treated and is now heart worm negative and on monthly preventions. She is of course spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. She is about 60 lbs of solid love! She has been introduced to other dogs and does well with dogs her size that are not alphas and is happy to run and play in a fenced yard. She would also do well as an only dog.

We hope there is a special adopter out there who will give Rita the life she deserves and have a lot of time and patience for her as she transitions to living inside a home. A home with a fenced yard and doggy door access to the yard would be the most ideal or someone who is home who can let her in and out as needed through out the day. She is a bit of a snuggle butt .. so be prepared for lots of love and affection as well. A physically fenced yard is a must! I would think she would be fine with kids 8 or older just because of her size and when she gets excited she can get a bit hyper lol.

Rita is a great dog, she needs a great family to step up and continue to be her rescue hero! We have done what was needed to get her healthy and ready, now it is time for a family to say “we want to give Rita the life she was always meant to have”.

You will find videos of Rita on our Facebook page as well if you want to see some of her earlier posts. She is a happy girl looking or a happy life!

2.

Interview

Phone interview to get more information about you, your family and tell you more about the pup(s) you are interested in.

3.

Approve Application

Once we approve an application, we set the status of the pup to "Adoption Pending" and schedule a home visit and meet and greet.

4.

We arrange a meet and greet and home visit if within distance. If all goes well we will finalize adoption at the end of this meeting.

Additional adoption info

Our adoption process starts with submitting an Adoption Application which can be found on our website at www.safehaventn.com. From there you will be contacted by one of our Adoption Coordinators. Our adoption donations are usually $150 for adult dogs and $200 - $300 for puppies - depending on the animal, breed, etc. We expect that our pets will live indoors, and will be adopted to families who have the desire to add another family member to their home. A vet reference is required.
