---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Murphy Brown hails from the streets of MexiCali, Mexico. While her full background is unknown, what we do know is she was paralyzed for quite a while, surviving on the streets until a rescue Samaritan saw her immediate need and took her for emergency medical care in January 2020. Thus started Murphy Brown’s journey of healing in mind, body, and spirit and her becoming the dog she was supposed to be under her wounds and emaciated body.
(medical) Murphy Brown is permanently paralyzed due to her broken spine at L1-L2, most likely sustained from being hit in the streets in Mexicali. Her rear legs are without use and they have muscle atrophy, making them small and thin, but she doesn’t mind if you call them ballerina feets. Without medical care or walking assistance, upon being rescued she had severe open wounds on her rear legs going down so far as the bone on her toes due to chronic dragging. Her private parts are well were one large lesion due to the friction of dragging. Since she is paralyzed, she cannot feel past the break in her spine, so thankfully she was unable to feel the wounds, which is a blessing, but also it means she could reinjure herself without feeling it.
Murphy Brown in also incontinent, which just means the world is her toilet, and she goes where she pleases (oh, to have such freedom!). While she can do some business on her own, she does require a caregiver to express her bladder multiple times a day to ensure no urine is sitting in her bladder and to prevent UTI’s, which can become very serious in her paralyzed state. Murphy Brown can easily walk on her front legs (and by walk, we mean RUN just as fast as any 4 legged dog) and “scoot” with lightning speed. Precautions should be taken when she is scooting to make sure her legs and private areas don’t get too beat up, as the dragging friction can create wounds that take a bit to heal. One bonus to this is her added wardrobe; she has a rotating closet of fun bandage colors, Velcro booties, and an assortment of leg covering options to give each day a little more accessories. Like most gals, this girls loves her accessories, and the best one of them all are her wheels. Animal Synergy immediately recognized the need for wheelchair that could give Murphy Brown the freedom she craved. They were able to get her an Eddies Wheels wheelchair, perfectly customized for her body, so she can stand or off-road to her heart’s desire with limited weight on her front end. While her wheels are a complete game-changer, she cannot lay down or sleep in her chair, so it should only be used a few hours at a time at max. Murphy Brown being able to be off the ground, and run effortlessly, gives her the freedom of mobility that inspires her confidence and creativity. Her wheels are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do, but watch out because some of the days, those wheels will run all over you.
Through months of physical and medical rehabilitation under the direction of Animal Synergy, this skinny caterpillar has become a full-bodied butterfly, flying on her custom wheels with a zest for life and adventure that is infectious to everyone who meets her.
(Behavior) Murphy Brown has no idea she is paralyzed, and that’s exactly how we aim for everyone to see her as well. Instead of paralyzed and incontinent, Animal Synergy sees a light brown dog who LOVES exploring, playing, and with boundless energy. She is paralyzed and perfect, 2 legs ain’t no thang, and normal is boring anyhow. She can be thought of a super athlete, and if there was a dog Special Olympics, she would win gold to match her heart of gold.
She has illimitable endurance and stamina. There are two Murphy Brown versions of “tired”, standing tired and mouth tired. Just because she is tired of standing, don’t be fooled, she still has plenty of energy to play on ground level, chew, destroy, make you laugh till your sides hurt, and find every pair of shoes hidden from her mouth. Murphy Brown is very mouth-oriented, and really enjoys a good chew toy, but she is a super athlete in more than just her front end, she also has a very strong mouth and jaw grip and lives to shred toys that companies say no dog can shred. As her behaviorist noted, she has more endurance and is stronger than dogs 3 times her size, and balls tend to die a messy death in her presence. Murphy Brown can walk miles in her chair and still have plenty of energy to kill a dozen tennis balls after a full day of exploring and playing.
But who needs balls and chew toys when you have friends around to chase, fellow snouts to paw, and a warm friend to cuddle up with? Murphy Brown does everything with intensity, and that extends to play… and love. She loves with her whole heart and her tiny feets. She loves her dog friends and family, and does well with dogs of all sizes and temperaments, but does best when not challenged by another dog. Being from the streets, she ain’t no faker, she is still a strong, independent, alpha dog needing to project strength and control. With Animal Synergy, she has let the dogs lead her and show her the ropes of living in a home. She is genuinely curious of other dogs, and engages in play frequently and does not exhibit any “aggression” but does try and be top dog {maybe this is just at my house because I have a bunch of weak, fake-alphas lol}.
For kitties, she has laser like focus, and while she has not tried to eat any animal friends, she definitely stalks them (cats, gophers, chickens, fish…) and should not be trusted to not try and take a small bite unsupervised… the faster they move, the faster she wants to move her mouth in their direction. While her breed is unknown, her behavior is all ball-obsessive lab mixed with street savvy, feeling good as hell, flower garden predator. While she is quite energetic, active, and playful, she is every bit as loyal, loving, and attached to her person as she is stealth killer of fuzzy toys.
Murphy Brown only knows how to grab life by the front legs and give it all her intensity. This is evident in her vast happiness, her play, and her ability to love. While she has no separation anxiety and is fine to be alone for a while (with a friend or chew toy preferably) she very much prefers to be around people. She will love back harder than you could ever love her, and she thinks her fur is made of Velcro (it’s not) and her paws are made of butter (they aren’t) but she still wants to attach herself to humans and paw them into love submission (she does).
Murphy Brown would do best in a home that understands her needs, but also knows she is not needy. She is consistently the happiest dog you can find. She loves learning new things, has no fear or reservations, and her only limit in life is the ones we put on her, as her body has no idea it has limits. She would do well with some canine friends because you always need a tribe that speaks your own language. Her ideal human family would be someone with a lot of patience, and willing to take a back seat on occasion and allow her to continue the healing momentum Animal Synergy has given her on the next upward and onward phase of her life.
