My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Leo!
Leo is a special boy all the way from Puerto Rico. Leo is now a 4-year-old collie mix Santo dog. He was a stray running the streets in Puerto Rico and was one of the lucky ones that made his way to the States through a rescue program. He was originally adopted out but sadly his mom had housing issues and had to move in with family the same month he was adopted. So he found himself in a home boarding rescue. He was in a compassion foster for a year before she decided to give him up and that's how he ended up here. Leo can be skittish but he falls fast for his people. Especially those that take the time to feed him treats. Leo is very food motivated and extremely smart. He loves long walks and runs, attention and affection with plenty of nurturing. He loves hikes and trails and swimming. Leo has a heart for adventures and the outdoors but he loves being NEXT to his person even more. A woman may be easier for Leo but he has bonded with men too. He is very shy, unsure, zero confidence with new people but once he does trust you, he is a forever faithful friend. He does love food and can be easily bribed with some yummy treats! Leo has fallen within a minute with some volunteers who feed him tasty soft smelly treats. And give him butt scratches. Leo needs an owner experienced with sensitive dogs that will not rush him and understand that he needs that time to build his trust. Patience is key with Leo. It took us a couple of weeks to build trust with him and it was all on his time.
Leo does great with dogs and cats. He needs a home preferably with a pack (1 or more dogs) for him to be with. He cannot be the only dog. Leo must have a secure, fenced-in yard. And playful active pup are a must. Leo loves the pack life. Leo is a wonderful dog that just needs someone to give him the time to build that bond. And you will forever have a faithful friend. Leo is house and crate trained, up to date on all appropriate core vaccines including lepto and corona, as well as rabies, dewormed, fecal tested negative, microchipped including free registration, neutered, heartworm and Lyme disease negative, and current on monthly heartworm flea/tick prevention.

We believe training is an ongoing process that needs to be worked on daily. New issues that arise, need to be addressed and/or rewarded. Understanding that continued training is a lifetime commitment, is very important. Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense. Meet & Greets are a required before proceeding with an adoption. We DO NOT ship any of our pets.

We are a volunteer-based rescue, meaning every person involved is doing their best. Normally our adoption application processing review may take 2 to 3 weeks give or take.

Go meet their pets

We are a foster-based all-volunteer program. We are not a government shelter facility nor are we open to the public. Our adoption process can take 2 to 3 weeks from the time you mail it in to the time that we reach out to you. If you are window shopping we are not the rescue for you. We are seeking committed adopters.

More about this rescue

Every animal in our care comes to us with their own story. Many of them have had it harder than others, and have scars that need a healing touch. What they all have in common, is that they came to us from other rescues/shelters that felt they couldn’t take on their individual needs, and give them the necessary care needed to help them bloom into family pets. Most pets we welcome into our program, need extensive behavior and/or medical care before they are ready for their forever homes. We provide each pet with an unlimited amount of time to recover, along with individualized care and training customized to there needs.

We at Animal House Sanctuary love a challenge and have a soft spot for these special pets in need. Most of all, we love seeing each individual pet change into the family pet they were always meant to be. Watching this firsthand, is beyond rewarding and fills us with a joy that cannot be described in words.

We are a 501(c) Licensed Nonprofit organization that is ran 100% by Volunteers. Our mission is to help homeless animals find great forever homes. Our heart is with the community, helping families keep their pets at home. We are involved with informing our local community about the importance of spaying/neutering their pets. We also help feed the homeless and their pets. Senior pets are precious and dear to our hearts which is why we are involved with the Hospice Heaven program. This consists of pulling older cats and dogs from high kill shelters and placing them in a loving home. This often includes matching senior pets with a Senior Adaptor. Sharing joy and respect for all precious life is something that we love doing, and will continue to do, for it fills our hearts.
