My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Shadow is a 13 year old, 5-pound Yorkie boy being fostered in Summerfield FL. Please Note: Due to COVID19 only applications within FL will be considered.

Shadow has now been in his foster home for one week and his foster family is getting to know him much better. Shadow is completely blind so he needs to have a FUREVER home that is blind-dog friendly. A single-story home and one where he cannot access water features such as an in ground pool or hot tub would be best. He will walk right into whatever is in his path so homes with pools should have a barrier to keep Shadow away from harm or agree to keep him in a harness and leash at all times when he is near water. It would be great to have an adopter with knowledge of blind dogs and their needs but others who are willing to learn about them could also be a good match for Shadow.

Shadow was surrendered to another rescue by owners who had failing health and were unable to care for him. They provided almost no background information on him other than they had him his whole life. Shadow saw the UYR Dogtor today and he is in good overall health for his age. His heart is normal size, strong and healthy. His teeth have quite a bit of tartar on them but should clean up well when he has his dental in two weeks. He has some mild anemia which is being treated and it should resolve on its own. He does have some mildly elevated kidney and liver values but the Vet says this is likely a form of chronic kidney disease that is seen in almost all dogs his age and with proper diet and management Shadow can still look forward to a good quality of life for quite some time. It is also possible that the elevations are temporary due to dental disease and could return to normal once his teeth are cared for. He will have labs rechecked in two weeks. As stated previously, Shadow is completely blind and probably has been for a while. He has cataracts in both eyes but the one in the left eye is very obvious. Some have asked if his vision could be restored with surgery and his general Vet felt it was not recommended to put Shadow through an elective surgery at his age that might only have a 50-50 chance of success. However to know for certain if Shadow could benefit from cataract removal and artificial lens implantation he would need to be evaluated by a Veterinary Ophthalmologist. The good news is that the good folks at Second Chances for Blind Dogs are donating a special Halo harness that is custom made to Shadow’s tiny size! This will help him navigate new territory without bumping into things. He is also hearing impaired but he can hear whistling, claps and other loud noises.

Shadow is a very sweet dog. He loves nothing better than to be held, snuggled with and carried around in his little sling carrier. He is good around other small dogs of similar energy levels. His former owners
indicated he was house-trained and he does well if carried outside every 2-3 hours but he has had a couple of quarter-sized dribbles in his foster home. He is not a barker and he travels well in a car. He loves his food and gobbles it down with joy. His sense of smell is extremely keen and when he smells food he will sniff you down! He will also do a cute little paw dance to melt your heart and make you give up a tiny morsel of your hamburger patty to make Shadow’s day! He loves to sleep right next to you in bed under the covers. He also likes crawling into one of his numerous soft beds with his Snuggle Puppy. You will not find a dog who wants to be with you more or who has a sweeter disposition than Shadow.

Shadow would love to go to a calm, loving home where he has humans who are home with him most of the time and have the time and energy to ensure his safety and lavish him with lots of love and attention. If you are looking for a tiny little lover-boy of a dog who is happy going everywhere with you in a little carrier or snuggling away the hours in your lap then Shadow would be perfect for you. However, since he can’t see to get out of your way, a home where assistive devices such as wheelchairs or walkers are used would pose a danger for him as well as a tripping hazard for the humans who use them. He cannot go to a home with children under the age of 14 due to his tiny size.
