Aberdeen Scottish Terrier Rescue is a registered 501(c)3.
Adoption application at www.aberdeenstr.com

***MUST SUBMIT APPLICATION before we will respond to email or phone inquiries. Thanks for your cooperation!***

WE ARE NOT A SHELTER, WE ARE AN ALL-VOLUNTEER RESCUE WITH FULL-TIME JOBS.
Please do not contact us to come look at a dog.
We will contact you once we have reviewed your completed application if we think your home might be a good fit. A reference check, phone interview, and home visit will be completed before meeting an adoptable dog.

We work quickly. Please do not submit an application until you are ready to bring a new furry family member home. Expect your references to be contacted shortly after submitting your application. We adopt out to homes around the US and Canada, but require that you are present for the meet and greet in Renton, WA.

Our adoption fee is non-negotiable as we need these funds to cover medical bills. The adoption fee is due on the day of adoption in the form of a check, Chase QuickPay, PayPal, or cash.

Prince Charles "Charlie"

Charlie a Scottish Terrier Mix, dilute brindle, is aproximately 8yrs old, 30 lbs, neutered and up to date on shots, including DHLPP, Bordatella, CIV, and rabies, microchipped, heart worm negative and has been diagnosed with environmental allergies that requires life time medical care. We are unsure what he is mixed with, Poodle, Schnauzer, Terrier?

Charlie and about 30 other dogs in very poor medical condition and treatment from a horrible hoarding situation arrived at a Animal Shelter in California. Poorly socialized and many with health conditions limited them to rescues only. ASTR rapidly stepped in and commited to rescuing several of these dogs. The medical costs of getting each of these dogs healthy has far exceeded their adoption fees.

Charlie skin at the time was covered in sores, bacterial and fungal infections and he was so miserably itchy. Quickly we worked to treat his skin with medications, medicated baths and lots of TLC. Yet he seemed very itchy and painful. We took Charlie to an Allergy and Skin Vet where he was tested, diagnosed with environmental allergies and a special serum was designed just for him. He has also received a few doses of Cytopoint injections to help with the allergy symptoms. He continues to get frequent baths to remove pollen from his fur and to prevent recurrant skin infections which he is prone to due to his environmental allergies. He has a Avagard D skin antiseptic creme put on any itchy spots daily between bath time to help prevent infection. Due to COVID this is on backorder and Duoxo Mousse is being substituted. The Avagard D definately works best. He does well with topical medications, ear cleanings and showers. He does squirm with getting his shots so a good holder and a nice treat after is a great help. Charlie will only be adopted to a home that will commit to continue his medical treatments.

When Charlie arrived at his foster home in WA he was very fearful and shy. He chose to hide as much as possible or stay close to his foster dad. He initially needed to be carried outside to the grass as he would freeze like a statue otherwise. He hid from the dog sitter for a month yet let her pick him up everytime. He eventually learned that his foster mom, dad and dogsitter will not harm him nor make him stay outside. Patience treats and at times limiting how much hiding he was allowed helped. He started to learn from watching the other dogs. He sleeps on the bed with his foster parents and often steals part or all of their pillows. He prefers them to go out with him and the other dogs and will look over his shoulder to see if you are coming. Charlie loves toys he can grab and shake, squeaky toys and things he can chew on like antlers, greenies, dried beef cheeks. When he is done with a toy or chew he likes to hide them in the couch or dog beds. He finds it fun to gather up any toys in the bedroom and move them to a dog bed or the couch.

He will play with the other dogs some, has a good Scottitude about him, has been around big and small dogs. We have not had him around cats. He is fearful around noisy and active small children. When afraid he chooses to hide.

Charlie can only go to a home without small children. Older children in the home should be respectful and understanding of Charlies needs. Charlie thrives in a home with a calm environment, other dogs and not alot of visitors. He needs a secure fenced yard or to always be leashed when outside. If there is a spot in a fence he can fit through he will make a go for it. He does not seem phased by loud noises in the home and is quite curious about things like vacuums, hammers, electric mixers and blenders. When strangers visit he tends to hide and takes days, even weeks before wanting to interact with new humans. When his foster parents traveled he did so much better staying in his home with foster grandparents coming to stay at the house than he did when he had to go stay at a different home. In new homes he tends to revert back to being very fearful, hides and does his statue routine. Charlie rarely barks and when he does it is often after the other dogs initiated the barking, or when he really wants to go outside.

Charlie is a sweet loving guy that enjoys hanging out on the back of the couch, playing with toys, the other dogs, loves a good petting from those he feels safe with and sleeps next to his humans at night. He loves his meals, treats, peanut butter and cheese. He is very smart and figured out a puzzle feeder in second and enjoys when we have him "forage" for his meals. He will try to eat from the same dish as the other dogs and has not exhibited resource guarding with treats, food or toys.

Charlies foster mom has groomed him four times now and each time he does so much better for her. He still is not a fan of having his legs and feet done but now tries pulling them away instead of mouthing like he did the first time. Foster dad helps with petting him before it starts and talking to him in a calm voice. Charlie does great for his showers (he takes a shower with his foster parent because the shampoo stays on 5-10 minutes) we have not had him professionally groomed and he will need someone who understands a rescue dogs need for time, patience and understanding. He gets his medicated showers weekly, at times more frequently.

Charlie is doing well with potty training, goes outside with the other dogs and at times will indicate (walks over to the door and stares at you) that he wants to go out. He will need continued work on potty training. Initially he may need to be carried outside and given a treat and lots of praise. Charlie will need continued work with walking on a leash as he is all go or hard stop but quickly starts to do as the other dogs do. Charlie has made several car rides and is doing well. Each time he gets a yummy treat and is doing so much better just timid.

As with all of our rescues Charlies will need work on potty training & training, so this should be something the new family would be willing to work on & commit to. Please do not submit an application if you are not willing to commit to one of our rescues care for their whole life & that includes if they need training. Please do not email us asking is Charlie is potty trained or available, nor do we ship dogs anywhere as we will not respond, nor will we separate this father & son.

Charlie is a true rescue and needs a home where the people are understanding of his past & what he has been through & what he will need in his daily life. His foster mom is truly heartbroken that he is leaving as they have really bonded but their home is not ready for another forever dog so it is time to find Charlie his furever home. Charlie needs a family that will not give up on him & if he does need training in their new home will in fact take provide/get the training & not just say they will when applying.

Please only submit an application if you are truly interested in adopting Charlie & going through our process, have read his listing fully to the end & are still wanting to adopt hom. If you are not responsive to our calls, emails or your references do not respond we will move on & remove your application from our system. You must be willing to go through our screening process which includes your references being checked, a phone interview & a home visit followed by a meet and greet & if it’s a good fit, up to our discretion. We will only be accepting applications for Charlie who understands all of his needs. Our goal is to find Charlie the best forever home and family.

Once we find the right home for each little soul we work fast, within days so the dogs can go to their forever homes in quite a timely manner. We do not hold onto dogs for people as our goal is to save lives & please do not submit an application if you are not ready to adopt. We also cannot respond to every application unfortunately.

Prince Charles "Charlie" has an adoption fee of $765 & are ready for their truly loving forever home & compassion & understanding of what they have been through & will only be adopted together.
