My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Joker!!! A 5-6-year-old American pit bull terrier mix.
Joker has been with us for 2 years now. He has been displaced his whole life and before us only experienced constant rejection which lead him to face euthanasia several times because most would not give him a chance. You see, Joker fears people which causes him to be somewhat reactive, but this is only if he’s not given the space and time he needs to trust he’s safe. With us, he has met so many people and done fabulously with them. Take the lead, don't overthink it or stress about him. Just take him and he will follows and will never question it. He response to confidence and littership.
We were Joker’s last hope and we took a chance not knowing much of him or about him, let's just say he has not disappoint. I felt his fear was more so of the unknown because of the lack of stability, a real home, and the ability to feel safe. Sadly Joker judges people who judge his breed too quickly as well. If you fear him for his look/bread he senses it. We have worked A LOT and feel it’s very much possible there is a special someone for him out there. Joker is reserved and guarded when it comes to change, being forced, pushed, and nervous energy and he can sense when those overthink him. If you lack confidence, fear dogs, behaviors, a challenge, or his breed please do not apply. Fear becomes the negative energy that he senses and causes him to be fearful too. Jokers need someone who is optimistic, positive confident, chill relax, respectful of his space and dont feel the need to overthink simplicity. Here is what we know of Joker? He is muzzle trained as we do for every dog in our care. Why? Why not?! It’s part of our basic obedience training and a skill every dog should have and every dog owner should warrant. While Joker sound intimidating, he is not. He will leave with anyone who takes his leash. He trusts people way too easily. Which is a good thing.
Especially if food is involved. He loves to eat. His fear comes from him beening failed 1 to many times. Why he is unsure. He lived with children at one point and loved them very much. He had a little girl and they loved each other. Why when losing her broke him! But we prefer a home with No young children at all. A responsible mature teen is acceptable. An active but calm home with other dogs is okay as well as a home by himself. Joker loves his daily walks, car rides, and weekly visits to the farm store and playing with his buddies, In fact, he got himself a girlfriend he luvs at tractor supply when we run into them. Joker is respectful of all dogs’ space and meets every dog and cat easily. There is no dog he will not thrive with as long as the dog does not bully him or is a major princess like Anubis.
Nurturing is the way to Joker’s heart, just saying. Joker still has a broken heart but the more positive experiences he has the better his chance at him healing. Joker is house and crate trained. Med to low energy, good with all dogs. He avoids trouble. Loves comfort and loves food even more. Give him the chance and you will not be disappointed, just saying. I can promise you this!

We are accepting applications for foster to adopt. Another dog in the home is suggested and breed experience knowledge is a plus. A secure fence in the yard as well.

All dogs are spayed/neutered, receive all sets of age-appropriate vaccines including lepto, corona, and rabies, are dewormed and fecal tested negative, microchipped including registration, and kept current on monthly heartworm and flea tick prevention upon adoption.

We believe training is an ongoing process that needs to be worked on daily. New issues that arise, need to be addressed and/or rewarded. Understanding that continued training is a lifetime commitment, is very important. Out-of-state adopters are welcome at the adopter's expense. Meet & Greets are required before proceeding with an adoption. We DO NOT ship any of our pets.

We are a volunteer-based rescue, meaning every person involved is doing their best. We are a foster-based all-volunteer program. We are not a government shelter facility nor are we open to the public. Our adoption process can take 2 to 3 weeks from the time you mail it in to the time that we reach out to you. If you are window shopping we are not the rescue for you. We are seeking committed adopters.

More about this rescue

Every animal in our care comes to us with their own story. Many of them have had it harder than others, and have scars that need a healing touch. What they all have in common, is that they came to us from other rescues/shelters that felt they couldn’t take on their individual needs, and give them the necessary care needed to help them bloom into family pets. Most pets we welcome into our program, need extensive behavior and/or medical care before they are ready for their forever homes. We provide each pet with an unlimited amount of time to recover, along with individualized care and training customized to there needs.

We at Animal House Sanctuary love a challenge and have a soft spot for these special pets in need. Most of all, we love seeing each individual pet change into the family pet they were always meant to be. Watching this firsthand, is beyond rewarding and fills us with a joy that cannot be described in words.

We are a 501(c) Licensed Nonprofit organization that is ran 100% by Volunteers. Our mission is to help homeless animals find great forever homes. Our heart is with the community, helping families keep their pets at home. We are involved with informing our local community about the importance of spaying/neutering their pets. We also help feed the homeless and their pets. Senior pets are precious and dear to our hearts which is why we are involved with the Hospice Heaven program. This consists of pulling older cats and dogs from high kill shelters and placing them in a loving home. This often includes matching senior pets with a Senior Adaptor. Sharing joy and respect for all precious life is something that we love doing, and will continue to do, for it fills our hearts.
