My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Duke (originally short for Marmaduke because he is a big handsome boy), aka Dukey Doo (because he is a big dork like Scooby Doo)! Duke is a two-year-old purebred German shepherd who weighs in around 85 lbs. This boy is tall & lanky for a GSD, which just adds to his charm, along with those ears! Duke did not sell for what the breeder wanted so was banished to a pen with his sister until he was about nine months old. His price was reduced to a fraction of his original price & he was bought by a family to be a playmate for their kids. Unfortunately, Duke had not been properly socialized so he was scared & not interested in the kids. After another nine months, Duke’s family decided to surrender him to rescue. In addition to not being socialized, other than initial shots & neuter so he didn’t breed with his sister, Duke was never taken to a vet & never given preventative. When he came to us he was infested with fleas, intestinal parasites & tested strong positive for heartworm. We worked with Duke to socialize him but after a month, he had to go on restricted activity for almost four months while he completed heartworm treatment. Once he beat heartworm, we started socialization again, only to be shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic this time! While Duke is a very sweet, friendly & playful boy once he feels comfortable, he is still pretty shy with new people up front. However, Duke LOVES other dogs & other friendly dogs put him at ease. Due to that fact, Duke will need to go to a home with at least one other young, playful sibling. Duke is a big goofball who also loves to gallop & play. Regardless of his size, he of course thinks he’s a lap dog! If you value personal space, Duke is not the dog for you! If you value a dry area within 10 feet of the water bowl, Duke is also not the dog for you! If you’re looking for a big, handsome, sweet goofball that just needs some patience, you better apply to adopt this boy today! Duke is house trained, crate trained & leash trained, although he starts out a little excited. He will need ongoing socialization & we are looking for a family with an active lifestyle to give Duke the life he deserves. A good-sized yard with a 6 ft wood fence will also be required so Duke can run & play. Duke is fully vetted including a microchip with lifetime registration. Adoption application, home check, vet reference & adoption contract are required. Duke’s adoption fee is $200.
