My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Barkley
This beautiful, young dog has experienced a lifetime of hurt already. When found he was hiding under a car, too scared to come out. From what we heard, he was running for his life and caused an accident while doing so. Everyone is all right, but Barkley was terrified. And from the looks of him, he was running around because someone didn’t give a lick about him. His collar was embedded in his neck. It’s still healing so the scars are visible and may always be. If that wasn’t bad enough, Barkley was sent to a high-kill shelter where we rescued him. Poor Barkley. Life has been especially tough for him.
Barkley arrived at our shelter on May 4, 2020. When he first arrived, our shelter was probably the only place where he’d had a safe place to lay his head at night. In spite of his abuse and neglect, Barkley is a love. He’s a one-year-old puppy and absolutely stunning. He sports a sweet and smiley face, a beautiful cream-colored coat and the cutest of ears. Barkley is thought to be a terrier mix. He is 54 lbs. of adorableness.
Barkley just spent a week offsite in foster care, which helped to give us additional insight. Per his foster momma he’s a sweet and good natured dog. He loves being around people and appreciates any kindness shown him. Barkley needs an attentive and experienced owner. He seems to get distracted easily and loses his focus, making him act a little like a wild child. He’s very smart though, but because he’s still learning how to focus, it takes consistency and a lot of patience to train him. He has learned some commands like sit and he is nearly house-trained. Barkley is very curious and likes to keep busy. Kongs or other chew toys are a must to ensure he only chews those things that are appropriate. Barkley is easily excited, probably because for the first time he’s being shown attention. When he calms down he LOVES to snuggle with his people and nap on the couch with them.
Barkley walks well on a leash. He LOVES belly rubs and thinks he’s a lap dog. He loves playing in the yard and likes to run and romp. Barkley loves playing fetch and will happily run for the ball and bring it back. Exercising Barkley will be important as he has a lot of energy that needs to be channeled.
Barkley would do best in a quiet neighborhood or in the country. He is deathly afraid of cars on the road, again most likely because he was nearly hit by them as he was trying to find a safe place to hide. Barkley loves having a crate and considers it a safe place to relax and find some quiet.
Barkley would do okay in a house with a larger and confident dog to stand up to his play. Barkley chases cats and cannot be in a house with them.
If you’re looking for a great family dog with a joy for life, Barkley may be your guy. He could sure use some TLC and a kind heart to erase his past. He’ll also do best with someone or a family that has dog experience. He responds to a gentle and firm hand and a lot of love.
