Here's what the humans have to say about me:
DUKE #2 is a 10-year-old neutered male black lab. Duke weighs 66 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.
DESCRIPTION Duke is a distinguished gentleman who sports a classy salt and pepper goatee and a silky jet-black coat. Graced with a calm sweet demeanor and gentle disposition, he is generally quiet and restful dog. He likes to nap on his dog bed during the day, and he is comfortable in a crate overnight. Duke can be a bit territorial with cats who approach him, and he will growl, bark, and sometimes give chase when teased. He is a happy dog, though not motivated by playing with balls or other toys. He is great on short walks (15 min.), generally keeps a loose leash, and is not frightened by cars, people, dogs, or strange noises. Duke is highly observant, especially for local wildlife for which he would happily keep lookout for hours. Clearly very intelligent, he is a budding escape artist who quickly finds vulnerabilities in backyard fencing and is inclined to dig holes. Good with other dogs, likes playing with the other LR pups at the kennel. No cats as he much too interested in them and will chase them Knows sit, come and down. Pulls a little on lead, good with an Easy Walk Harness. House trained
UPDATE: From his foster. He is settling in and loved exploring his surroundings. He was not fazed by the vacuum cleaner or the crazy sounds (helicopters, explosions) coming from Ft. Eustis. He is a very quiet dog. Walks very well on a leash. He met our neighbors and did well, walks past other dogs with no problem. He does whimper a tiny bit in the crate. I would be cautious with him in a house with cats. Our Norman is very dominant and has been growled at when they were engaged in a stare down. I don't completely trust him with cats - he doesn't seek them out but doesn't want a relationship with them. He slept soundly in his crate last night 9 hours. Duke is very smart, he quickly sized up our fence and found a small area that he could begin to start digging under. He has been enjoying his walks.
UPDATE: Duke is a happy dog, though not motivated by playing with balls or other toys. He can be a bit territorial with cats. He lets the cats know to keep their distance, he doesn't go after them except if they approach him. Clearly very intelligent, he is a budding escape artist who quickly finds vulnerabilities in backyard fencing and is inclined to dig holes. Duke is a sweet boy, a gentle presence, and a would make a great companion in calmer households. See distinguished Duke here: https://youtu.be/v79m-S3xwyo
Update: Frosty-faced Duke is looking for a special person who wants to love him for who he is. He loves napping, taking walks, and his caregivers. He is older with a few medical issues after being out on his own and fending for himself. He would like a peaceful place to retire. Duke would prefer to be the center of attention without other dogs or cats competing for love. He does not do well with stairs. He needs to be placed in a home with no more than two steps going in and out of the house. At this point in his life, he's looking for a quiet place to retire without other cats and dogs. He would like to spend his days napping on a fluffy bed and taking multiple walks around the neighborhood. Handsome frosty-faced Duke: https://youtu.be/gCLvQsZ_xRY
