Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Kohana is a playful, energetic, and spunky Shiba Inu. She has only ever lived with one family her whole life, but she kept escaping her home and yard. They were worried about her safety, so they found DC SIR and felt comfortable trusting them to find her a loving forever home. Kohana is quite playful and often gets into fits of playfulness, zooming, and trying to get other dogs to join in. She gets them to run around the house until they tire themselves out. If no one wants to join her, she rolls her head on blankets, the bed, or up against her foster parents to get them to play with her. She will even take her toy and squeak it over and over until someone plays with her. She’ll also get vocal if she wants you to play by giving you an energetic bark. Even with all this energy, she will still share her toys with others and lets them take it away. We feel Kohona will do best in a home with other friendly dogs to play with.
When she’s not playing, Kohana loves laying in beds, especially her foster parents’ bed. She lays at the foot of the bed and will not move. But when it’s time to wake up, she will use her voice to wake up her foster parents. When visitors come to the house, she will bark and jumps on them, but it’s because she is so excited to see them.
She loves going on walks around the neighborhood. She gets so excited about walks that when her foster mom holds up her leash, she runs inside from the backyard. She knows what that leash means! She has adjusted well to being walked with a harness. She does pull but is getting better at it. She walks with her other foster siblings, and she’s patient with them if they want to stop and sniff. When outside in the backyard, she can be inconsistent about coming back inside when called. Sometimes she’ll run right in with the other dogs, and other times she will get close to the door, then run away. When you try to get her, she will bark and play bow, so coming inside may be a game to her.
When it comes to food, she will jump her paws on her foster mom’s lap when she sees her eating. She’s so determined that she will try to jump on the couch and get close to people eating snacks. This has been easily managed with redirection. She has transitioned well to the raw diet. During mealtime, she can be a little snippy if you put your hand near her. She’ll bark and nip at you, but this can be easily resolved by feeding her separately from others.
Kohona is friendly to strangers but sometimes runs away if they reach down to pet her or offer treats. Once she gains your trust, she will let you pick her up, touch her paws, examine her face, and pluck tufts of fur.
Medically, Kohona is a healthy Shiba Inu. She has a noticeable underbite that is not expected to create any life issues. Kohona was diagnosed with a II heart murmur.
