My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! I'm Duke! I'm 3-4 years old and came to AZBHR from Yuma, where my owner had a bunch of other bassets. One day, all of us got into a squirmish and one of us bit him. He didn't know which basset did, but Animal Control forced him to choose one of us to relinquish, and I was the one he pointed to. But, I have to tell you, I don't have one aggressive bone in my body. In my foster home, I have a younger brother who clearly wants to be the alpha dog, and I'm A-OK with that. I love having him as a playmate, but I think I'd be just as happy to be the only one you have to cuddle.

My foster mom tells me I'm just about the cutest basset she's ever seen. See the beautiful permanent eyeliner I have around my eyes? And see how I pose my paws in the cutest way when I sit? She calls me her "gentleman in training" because I already have so many great qualities. I get along well with big people, kids, other dogs and even cats. I play nice with everyone and don't get into the trash, shoes and other typical basset favorites. I like to play, but I'm never aggressive when I do. I am extremely food motivated, so I'm easy to train, too. I've already learned "sit" and "stay" in just a few short days. And I never miss a meal! I love, love, LOVE to go on car rides and walks, too.

Sure, I do have some room for improvement--you can't expect perfection can you? I'd prefer a home with a doggie door because I'm so polite that I don't disturb people when I need to go outside. I'm earning a healthy appreciation for the term "uh uh" when I use my long legs to prop myself up on the counters or try to give you a hug. (I never try to get anything on the counters though--I'm just curious). I am also learning that getting on the couch and beds is a privilege, not a dog-given right. But I sure am learning fast, and I sooo want to please everyone!

I sure would like to meet you and show you what a gentleman I can be.
