My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Holly is a very happy, attentive and determined dog who loves giving and receiving affection. She is house trained, knows her name and sheds very little. She has full run of the house when alone and loves to snuggle in bed overnight. She is a huge fan of chewy sticks. Holly gets along and plays great with the resident dogs, but loves human attention and shows her joy when getting it! Holly is great with kids.

Holly has a missing rear toe, has weakness in her back end and occasionally shakes or trembles in the front end when first getting up. She was examined by a board certified neurologist and they could not find a cause for her condition. Based on how long the weakness has been present, they determined it likely could not be corrected. Luckily, it doesn’t stop her from walking, running, jumping or playing. She has a very strong front half that helps her compensate for her back end weakness but she does shake or tremble when she's getting up after resting or when she's being picked up or put down. The trembling only lasts a few seconds. Based on her condition, she has a few considerations before adopting: Stairs can be a challenge so she would do best in an environment with minimal steps. Non-skid rugs will be needed on non-carpeted floors to help her get her footing and help her get up onto the couch or bed. She sometimes needs a little stabilizing when getting up or when you first set her down. It will be important to make sure she maintains a healthy weight and to keep her nails trimmed to give her the best footing on hard and icy surfaces. Since she has been in our care her condition has not changed but we are unsure if she will get better or worse over time. We do know that right now Holly gets around and is a very happy, playful dog that has been nothing but an inspiration to her foster humans and gives them great joy. Holly is looking for a forever family that will accept her physical limitations and is willing to do whatever necessary to help her adjust and adapt to her new home.

Holly is estimated to be three to four years old and 43 lbs. Since we don't know at all what doggy genes are in the dogs make up (we don't know who mom and dad are!), we are just guessing on breed.

All dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. They have all had a vet exam, are up to date on vaccinations, have been given a dewormer, are treated for fleas, have a heartworm test if over 6 months old and are up to date on a heartworm preventative.

Please note that because we require a home visit at the time of adoption we can only place animals in homes within a 60 mile radius of Minneapolis. If you are interested in meeting this dog please fill out the pre-adoption application on our website at http://www.safehandsrescue.org under Adopt and we will get back to you to arrange a meeting in the foster home.
